General Anaesthetic Made My Tinnitus Go Away

I had a minor operation yesterday and for about 2 hours after the op my tinnitus completely went away. Once the Anaesthetic wore off it came back. So weird!

It was a blissful two hours!

Both local and general anesthetic have this effect. I don't know why this happens, but it is interesting. Why would it affect tinnitus?

For obvious reasons this drug cannot be administered on a daily basis for tinnitus relief. If anyone has more information on this please post it here. I am interested to learn more about it.

I have also experienced this. I don't know the exact process of this but that must quiet the neurons in some ways. Tinnitus is in the brain because of some neurons being too excited as they are looking for a lost signal. I have posted something in the Frequency Therapeutics thread about this.

Wait a second. If the anesthetic stops signals from being sent TO the brain, wouldn't that mean there is a misfiring somewhere? Maybe the noise isn't being created in some parts of the brain, but being send there from somewhere else because the anesthetic stops it?

Signals are just electrical impulses the brain interprets. Think of it more as a faulty electrical circuit, or one with a failing fuse. At low levels of input it can work ok, but as the levels increase it gets less and less reliable, and becomes easily overloaded. Anesthetic slows down the nerve signals, thus reducing flow, thus reducing the chances for failure.

Interesting. Perhaps there can be a drug that when administered in a certain place it can just affect tinnitus? Or is it slowing the signals in the brain all together?

I ask because people have reported local anesthetic from the dentist doing the same thing.

Very interesting. I know he is currently studying tinnitus and has a fund raiser going. So his research is looking to have a drug that can be administered near the ear to reduce the sending of these signals? I quickly read over both so I don't have the best understanding.

P.S The nurse told me when I was in recovery and still high on drugs I said to the surgeon "You are a hottttt guy! I was expecting an ugly old man for my surgery!" Omg so embarassing.

That propofol also suppresses the perception of tinnitus does not surprise me now.

Interesting. I'm currently looking in to being placed in a coma for a while so this finding has given me some significant hope!

I just had another surgery and this happened again!! It's amazing! It lasted the same as last time, around 3 hours. Sadly it's now back, just as loud.

Hearing silence is so so beautiful, it actually made me cry.

@Holly1987 Interesting. Reversible tinnitus and hearing disorders following local anaesthesia normally occur in cases where there's central nervous system toxicity. You were given pure oxygen. There are home tests for this. I would ask a doctor if your nervous system isn't getting enough oxygen for oxygen therapy treatment.

Just wanted to share that this happened to me AGAIN today after an operation. This time it lasted about 5 hours. Sadly not permanent but it's pretty amazing when it happens.
