Hi all, tomorrow I'll be undergoing surgery for my pneumothorax. This is the second time it happened to me, the first happened in October, and since these two cases are so close, the doctors decided that they would have to possibly remove a weaker bit of my lung/seal my lung to my pleural cavity. I'm not so scared of this as I have had an appendectomy in 2011, but I am scared if my tinnitus gets worse due to medications. I'll bring this up to the surgeon tomorrow.

I was wondering if anyone has undergone surgery before with tinnitus, and how did it go for you?

Thanks.

Many people didn't have any problems with anesthesia. It seemed to get rid of their tinnitus temporarily.

If you are referring the medication after the surgery, I am sure you can discuss this with your doctor and they can help figure something out.

If anyone else has experience with this chime in.

That's good to hear about the anesthesia, and I did turn down a pain killer that was on a list from the ATA about medications associated with tinnitus when i was admitted yesterday night.

Nice profile pic btw, h3 is a pretty funny guy

Yeah i think the main problem with painkillers is that they also have high doses of aspirin.

Hi, I may have to undergo the same, i.e surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax. This would be my second pneumothorax after more than 20 years. I have an appointment for tomorrow. I'd love to hear any bits of advice on the effects of surgery on tinnitus. I know pneumothorax is quite painful to say the least. Is it really manageable without taking pain killers? I have severe and (so far) permanent/constant tinnitus.

I had a major surgery in mid-November (1st rib resection and scalenectomy to treat vascular thoracic outlet syndrome). My tinnitus was at quite a low level for the month or so prior to surgery, but spiked fairly nastily after about 12 hours post-waking up in recovery. Amazingly, I didn't need pain meds, only a few tylenol - I think it was the physical and nervous system stress that triggered the spike, and or meds given during surgery. It slowly went back down over the next several weeks, but it was a pain because the resurgence of the tinnitus coincided (caused?) a rebound in my sleep maintenance insomnia. Things have settled down a lot except for a recent T spike and insomnia caused by job change.
I wouldn't avoid the surgery - it isn't going to cause a permanent spike, it would be temporary if any at all (many go through surgery without T spikes).

@Milky Way I don't think the surgery itself caused a spike for me, but they did have me take tylenol and motrin (ibuprofen) after for a week+ which may have caused it to get a bit worse for me. Either that or the environmental of the hospital was loud enough for me to mask it and i just got used to not hearing it as well. As for the pain, everyone has a different tolerance, so if it's too much and you're worried about it getting worse you can see if they can give you Paracetamol as i've read it may not be ototoxic

I think @Eric N had an increase from Tylenol.

Hi, I've had detached retina surgery, and foot surgery , both in the last 6 months. My tinnitus was not affected.
