I'm just beside myself at the weekend.

My boy (7-year-old German Shepherd) had to be put to sleep as he got worse. 8 months or so ago he was diagnosed with DM and he was on meds and I tried my best to keep him comfy but over the weekend he got that bad, he could not even stand and was not eating. The vet said there was nothing that could be done and that it would be best to stop his suffering.

I'm heartbroken. He was everything to me, he got me through some tough times, he was there for me when my dad died, he got me through Cervical cancer (which left me unable to have my own children) and is the reason I beat cancer as he gave me the strength, he saved my life when I was attacked when walking him, he was my boy, my everything.

He got joy in his last month's since his diagnosis, in the form of Harvey, a Bernese I rescued two months ago, he was like a puppy again when Harvey joined us. To some he's just a dog, not important like a human, to me he's my child, my best friend, my protector.

Goodbye my sweet boy. Rest in peace :puppykisses:

Im sorry @Sarah200 to hear of your loss. I complexity feel the same way that they are our children. And that they get us through difficult times. The important thing is that you gave him a good life and that you loved him and he loved you.

@Sarah200 My heart goes out to you. Dogs are every bit as special as any person walking this earth. Their love and companionship is what keeps a lot of us going.xx

That last line is so true for me before I got Harvey. Duke ( GSD) really was the only thing that kept me here, once I got tinnitus, he knew something was wrong with me with the way I was and kept trying to comfort me and make me laugh and a lot of the time he's was the one who got me through my very dark days. Harvey does the same now so I'm so glad I have him.

I count myself blessed to have shared my life and home with such an amazing dog and he will live in my heart forever.

This is so difficult @Sarah200. It took a long time for me to get over losing my Casey. But my heart is filled with his memories. I know there is a doggie heaven somewhere.

I once threw myself in front of a car because my dog was crossing the road in the park and the driver didn't see him. It was totally instinctive. I just did it.

I knew in that moment that the love I had for him was identical to the love people have for their children.....I would die for him.

And now ironically I live and endure this horrendous torture for him.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. We cannot have a more faithful, loving companion and friend than a good dog.

I just wish that they had a longer life-span. Will Rogers thought so highly of dogs that this quote is attributed to him:

@Sarah200 - I am so so sorry.

At times when my own life has been pure hell on Earth, my cats and dogs made all the difference.
They were worth being born for.

Dave xx

Thank you all, Harvey my bernese mountain dog has been cheering me up by making me laugh everyday.
