Has Anybody Experienced This Specific Type of Tinnitus?

Hi all,

About a year and a half ago I randomly got tinnitus (still have it)and then that was followed by all of these other weird symptoms that came and went. Many symptoms have unfortunately returned and I am trying to get to the bottom of whatever is going on.

So this phenomenon happened to me initially and caused my permanent tinnitus and also happens maybe a couple of times a month; I have a sensation of air being sucked out of ONE ear (sometimes left ear, other times right ear, but never both) and almost like a temporary deafness that lasts a few seconds. This is then followed by a much louder tinnitus than I normally have, sometimes it has been very high pitched, other times it has been very low pitched (this one really freaks me out). It lasts in total about 15 seconds and then passes. I can't really identify a pattern for when this stuff happens and seems to be quite random.

I have posted my symptoms and my experiences in other forums and I have come across several people who experience this sensation and also share lots of similar symptoms to mine. In addition, about a month after I first got tinnitus, my girlfriend also got tinnitus and she also experiences this sensation from time to time. This leads me to believe that whatever is going on with me, is some kind of virus/bacteria/infection or whatever.

Any suggestion/experience/knowledge is appreciated!

I used to get some of these symptoms. I'd go back to many years before I had permanent tinnitus, I would stand up to quickly, get a "white out" across my eyes and then ringing in my years and the feeling of needing my ears to pop.
Your tinnitus sounds very unique. It could be a bacterial infection or lyme disease. I really don't have much knowledge on tinnitus. I haven't even done any diagnostics yet but I would definitely suggest some more exploration of your tinnitus.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have come across several people online who have experienced this kind of fleeting tinnitus that I get from time to time. I feel like it may be a clue to what condition I actually have as it is such a specific phenomenon.

I used to get those a year or two back. My money is on intermittent middle ear muscle spasm.

I also experience this from time to time. It's scary at first but usually only lasts a few seconds and then goes away. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it and would just accept it as part of the package deal you get when you have T. No ENT (I've seen several) has any explanation for it.

Sounds like normal Fleeting T. But with a bit more aural fullness. I've had a lot more frequent Fleeting T in both ears since all this started. Never both, just one. I've had quite a few times with a large amount of aural fullness that can be scary too. Never had the aural fullness part before I got 24/7 T when I would get fleeting T.

My hearing problems started on the 8th or 9th day of Azithromycin, was at work. And I got two huge bouts of aural fullness and low frequency fleeting T (something i'd never experience before.) about an hour apart from each other. After the second one, I noticed the hearing in my right ear had changed. Like a high frequency band from 7-10Khz just dropped a large amount. I was already suffering from ETD, the crazy sinus issues i'm still dealing with.

I am not too worried about it, but I feel like it may be indicative of something else going on. I have these flare ups of symptoms (mostly fatigue and neurological stuff), and it has happened twice now. It all started with the fleeting T which then turned into permanent T.

I am sorry to hear you are going through this. Thanks for the explanation, it is scary for a few moments but it passes quite quickly. Strange how the frequencies change so much.

I think I have some ETD issues too, my ears click whenever I talk or make certain sounds.

It's very strange. That much is for sure. The fleeting T doesnt' bother me much. Doesn't seem to affect anything other than that one specific time.

There are times when my ears feel borderline normal. Like today mostly. Doesn't feel like I have to pop my ears constantly. Ear doesn't hurt quite as much. And hearing feels generally better/more normal.
Sure beats the pain I felt all over my right side of my head/face in the muscles yesterday. (TMD. Though my recently scheduled Dentist apt was cancelled and they still haven't called to reschedule. I should've signed up for better insurance when I had the chance during enrollment this year. Good Dental is super cheap through my employer. I wish I could buy insurance year round)
