Cause of Tinnitus
Hashimoto's
Hi all, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and started on levothyroxine about 8 weeks ago. Since then I've developed severe tinnitus in one ear along with a feeling of fullness and the inability to "pop" that ear. It's gotten so bad I have a sort of feedback sound when I hear certain frequencies. It sounds like a loud metallic screech just when certain pitches are heard...in addition to the loud monotonous electric hum I'm getting all the time. My endocrinologist is dismissive. My GP prescribed a course of antibiotics which, of course, had no effect whatsoever. (I haven't had a cold, cough or allergy attack in a very long time).

Has anyone else had a similar problem? I suspect I have a closed eustachian tube, but have no idea what to do about it or whether it may be caused by the hypothyroidism or the levothyroxine, some other med (bupriopion, metaprolol) I am taking or a combination of any of these. I'm supposed to travel to the mountains in 2 weeks and on a trans-Atlantic flight in 2 months. I'm afraid I may have to cancel both.

Welcome to the forum. If you have a closed or blocked eustachian tube, then you may want to give this a try. Good luck & take care. God bless.

Thanks. I tried this (and several other techniques I found online), but nothing is working. This tinnitus is really weird. I just noticed today that if I whistle, I actually hear two different pitches of whistling....very odd sensation.

Well, turns out I have sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss and that it is probably too late to do a heck of a lot about it. Doctors need to be more informed on this and not dismiss tinnitus as ear infections, especially when the patient hasn't had even a cold or allergy problem in years...
