Cause of Tinnitus
long term noise exposure (headphones), maybe some stress.
A weird thing has happened.

I have had a cold since Friday last week, and have all the classic symptoms including a runny/stuffed nose. While doing the dishes today I suddenly realised that my hyperacusis has diminished greatly... I could stir around the forks and knives in my kitchen drawer without any pain or discomfort whatsoever...

I am amazed at this, could my cold have anything to do with it?? Have any of you ever heard that hyperacusis can better while having a cold.

I am hoping it will last after the cold, but I am doubtful about that.

The cold is gone, and my hyperacusis is still at the same low, as it was the other day. It is sooo much better. This is amazing!

This last week I have not really used sound enrichment at night, I have used it less and less over the last many weeks, because I felt it did me more bad then good. I got awaken by it and such. Sometimes I use it to fall asleep, but I put a timer on it, and only play it for maybe a half an hour.

I dont know if it has anything to do with it, or if it is coincedence.....but maybe, sound enrichment at night is not that good afterall. My ears seem to have improved from the silence/rest

Wow! I am so glad that happened to you!

And I wonder why it happened to you. Maybe there is something in that experience that can shed light on our susceptibility to hypeacusis.

Same for me. I have difficulties not to actually pop my tubes, but to close it - they tend to open during any physical activity. So whenever having cold I feel T and sensitivity diminishes greatly.

But how come T and H becomes better for you and me when we have a cold. I don't understand what happens in the body that makes it better :D

@TheDanishGirl If its been better over all thats the most important thing :)

Yes, it is better then it was before, so I am happy about that.

Tonight I will spend new years eve with a couple of friends, their kids (aged 5 and 8) and another friend. I will see how my H reacts :)

I think it has something to do with shifting the pressure in your ears. I'm sure there's way more to it than that.

@TheDanishGirl Glad to see you're doing better.

I hope it disappear soon, I feel your sadness. Do you exposed your ears to daily sounds? You wear earplugs all the time? It gives you pain when having a converstion?

I'm on the same track.

Yes, I expose myself to daily sounds. I do not wear ear plugs all the time, only when I have to be around sounds that hurt my ears, for more then a few minutes. Quiet/low level conversation does not hurt my ears, but if people raise their voice or laugh a bit loud, then it hurts.

Sorry to hear, you are also struggling. I have to inform you that I AM tapering of benzo's at the moment (almost done) so maybe that has caused a spike in my H. I will have to wait and see if there is any improvement in it a couple of months after getting off the benzo completely. But I am not expecting anything.

So far sound enrichment has not worked for me, but I still use it, especially when I sleep cause I have heard that silence is bad for the H.

I'm suffering from T and H ass well. Severe T and H since a couple of months. I don't use sound enrichment. I work in my home office all day alone but windows open, so i can hear cars, birds etc... I don't play music in the background. A couple of months ago i needed to use ointment and my T went crazy, because this seemed to be ototoxic the Phd Dr. subscribed me other ointment. However i searched on the net to find more about this first ointment, there a Dr. told a woman to take NAC and METH after she used this ointment. So i started to take this supplements too. At that time my H was that bad that i couldn't take it someone speaking at normal volume too close to my left ear. We also switched positions at the kitchentable, lubricated the door-handles... After 2 weeks taking 600mg NAC and METH a day met H improved a lot. One day I was beating eggs in a glass with a fork and my daughter said "Watch out! What are you doing!", but it wasn't a problem. Met T was still there but with better H you get less focussed on it. At least this is my experience. Unfortunally i got over confident and DUMB, I started playing music again, this caused to bring me back to the previous level. Due to an operation on my eye yesterday i was exposed to loud noise again and i was very stressed. I'm started taking NAC and METH again since yesterday evening, i hope it improves again. Fingers crossed.

I tried NAC. It did not improve my H.
