Hearing Aids

I have had my hearing aid for six weeks now. Only my left ear qualified for insurance to pay. I didn't realize have much I had missing! Rustling paper, my feet walking on the carpet. Brushing up against things. A lot of little noises...

I have a behind the ear with the tiny speaker in the ear. I feel like I have very natural hearing, except my voice is much louder. When I whistle, it warbles... There are other things, but mostly I forget I have it in. In fact, I think most nights, I don't remember the hearing aid in until I hit the pillow. Rats... The ringing in the morning reminds me to put my hearing aid in.

Wherever you get your hearing aid, I do recommend getting you hearing batteries at Costco! At the audiologist office, one card of six batteries costs $32. For a package of six cards with 8 batteries each, we paid $8.49? My batteries are 312's. I use one battery a week.

I do believe I benefit from the hearing aid, both in hearing and decrease in ringing. We are not done exploring my hearing loss. It seems to be mixed. I need to see my ENT again.

You are right to use a hearing aid. Some people do not realize that if they have hearing loss and don't wear an hearing aid, the brain tries to compensate for the loss in hearing by turning up its internal volume so it can pickup sounds from the outside world. While it turns up its internal volume it also turns up the volume of the tinnitus, which makes it louder and more intrusive. A hearing aid supplies the brain with extra sound and over the the brain turns down its internal volume control and this also reduces the the tinnitus.

Yes, that is the main reason I went for the hearing aid. It also helps a lot that insurance covered it. My other ear could benefit too, but I can't afford to pay for it. My left ear has the greater hearing loss, the ringing and the hearing aid. When I did my first hearing test. The ringing has gone to my right ear too. But both my ears had been clogged. Once my ears opened, the ringing retreated back to the left ear.

This tinnitus can be so weird... It moves, it changes, it goes up, down, new temporary sounds, then back to the basic everyday sounds. I wouldn't complain if it went away!

There are different causes and theories for tinnitus. For me, I believe the theory you stated to be true. It makes sense to chase the treatments that match your cause and theory. I wonder if the ringing would go all the way away if I could wear my hearing aid all day?

Was wondering what anybody experiences were with hearing aids. T better worse?

Hello Jake ,if you have any sort of hearing loss proven by an audiologist especially High Frequency then you have to try them they will knock the noise off by at least 50% Good luck.Pete
Yes I have hearing loss already had a hearing test. Left ear is 50db not sure what frequency though. I thought alot of people with t caused by hearing loss would have hearing aids but it doesn't seem that way, maybe I'm wrong.

Hi friends :)

My tinnitus is beyond garbage and my hearing has also been not so great. The one thing that i do limit my self from are social activities. I love meeting new people and making friends, but i cannot hear people that speak in low tones.

I have entertained, the idea of getting hearing aids...but I just cannot bring myself to do it. I don't want people to see me wearing them.... (yes, they have somewhat invisible hearing aids, but still it could be seen..to some degree)

Has anyone here, got hearing aids due to their tinnitus being so so loud and their hearing, being so poor?

Guys and gals please join in , on this conversation..

Ty

I am wearing hearing aids for 2 years due to bad hearing now. I am 29 years old by the way. At first I was having the same thoughts as you now have. But guess what, when you are confident in yourself, everyone else is accepting you as you are and no one bats an eye. Just be open with that topic.
Also hearing aids are not that big anymore, there are really tiny behind the ear models that no one notices when you have a little amount of hair covering it. People are often suprised, when i show them my hearing aids.
Additionally people are rather afraid (at least here in germany) to ask you about your hearing aids, because they have no experience with impaired people and this makes them uncomfortable.

But! And read now carefully! Hearing aids can and will damage your hearing further when they are not fitted (regarding loudness) correctly. I had to learn this by losing many db. If you ever get some, wear them as quietly as possible, just enough to help but nothing more. And never listen to your acoustician when he says: "wear them all the time". Use them only when you need them, and try to cope with bad hearing by learning lip-reading as an additional tool.

Edit: My hearing aids help me a lot with understanding and a little bit with tinnitus. But they are no magic bullet.

Re the above post ,,I have a totally different feeling about this still its all about opinions and as im not an inventor its only what I have researched :) The Brain need the stimulation of hearing all frequencies it keeps it energised people with hearing loss dont have this obviously.Hearing Aids give you all your frequencies back. I also wear them at night for some odd reason it knocks the T out even in the quiet ,good luck all

Thought I would join in this as I wear hearing aids supplied by my nhs audiologist. I first had tinnitus in 2011 and was referred by my gp to the hospital hearing clinic. They did the hearing test and found a loss of hearing at the top end scale. They offered hearing aids to compensate for this and these worked well to bring back the lost sounds. This also did help with the tinnitus as the higher pitch sounds I now hear and help to mask. The hearing aids were changed last year for ones that have inbuilt masking sounds of white noise. I find this is really beneficial when my tinnitus spikes. The audiology dept. can set the volume levels of the masking sounds to suit the individual. I would recommend hearing aids to anyone thinking about it. After all you don't think twice about wearing glasses to help correct your vision. Correcting your hearing is no different.

not aware of the sophistication of hearing aid design but my nhs devises do not. If I find the background noise is too loud then I switch mine off.

Hi Guys/Gals

My tinnitus is beyond garbage and my hearing is poor. I was at a chipotle restaurant today and was ordering food and it was very tough to order the food and hear the gal that was taking my order.

I have struggled with this issue for over 20 years and did not want to lose my image and appeal by wearing a hearing aid. It felt horrible, not being able to order my food today and it feels horrible that I limit myself from social activities because I cannot hear too well and hold conversations.

I hate my tinnitus, but i hate not hearing way more than the sound my tinnitus drills me in both ears ans full blast 24 7.

So, I am going to go to a hearing center either this week or next and see what happens next.

Has anyone here bought and use hearing aids because their tinnitus so just SO SO loud?

Bless all that suffer :)

What was the cause of your hearing loss and how much db@x khz?

I usually forget to take my hearing aid out before my head hits the pillow. Then I feel my hearing aid. Rats! Then I take it out.

About hearing aids being seen? I had mine for two days and no one at home noticed. They knew I was going to get it. They knew about my appointments. They never noticed! Even my Deaf friends didn't notice! I wear my hair up all the time! It only covers my hearing aid when it's down, maybe...

I agree with having it on the lowest setting possible and still be effective.

My daughter has a bone conducting hearing aid that has a button to cut out the background noise and focus on the sound source you are facing.

My hearing aid can have white noise, but I think I like purple noise better. I need to go in and see what can be done.

I have a small behind the ear with just a wire going to the speaker. The wire blends in with light skin, but I thought it quite noticeable (since I'm tuned in and aware) on very dark skin. I have Mediterranean olive skin. I wonder if it could be dyed or lightly stained to match the skin if you're really careful and mindful of the ingredients?

Hey guys,

So I get hearing aids tomorrow to trial as a treatment for my tinnitus. I'm just wondering if anyone has had success with reducing their tinnitus with using hearing aids.

I mean, the theory makes a lot of sense to me. I've read a few places and heard from a few people that my tinnitus, because it is from hearing loss, is my ears trying to compensate for the tones it cannot hear, so in theory the hearing aids may help by amplifying those tones so that I can hear them and then the tinnitus may dissipate.

Just looking for some input from those with experience :)

I was hopeful about my hearing aid, but it doesn't do much for my T unfortunately.
This being said, I have read reports of people finding that they help them a lot, so YMMV!
What brand/model are you getting?

Good luck!

They have helped me quite a bit. My T is from hearing loss. If I don't wear my hearing aid I get descent T that day and loud T the next day. Its almost guaranteed. I can be having a 1 T day and when I take them out in about 5 minutes it goes from a 1 to a 3,4 or 5. When I put them back in 5 min later it goes back to a 1. Every day is different and I experiment a lot.
Everyone is also different. You need to find what works for you, but give them a chance.

That being said, if I don't wear them for a few days the T will be loud and then my brain adapts again after a few days and the T gets softer again. I do have the overall lowest T days though with my hearing aides in place and trying to stay as busy as I can and not think about the T or look for it.

Hey Greg,

So I've had my hearing aids since Friday. Unfortunately, I think you're correct. They haven't done a damn thing for my tinnitus so far. I actually think the tinnitus may be a bit worse. I do like the hearing aids though. It's crazy how much I wasn't hearing that I can now. They also seem to have eliminated any minor hyperacusis I may have had. I don't find myself cringing as much about the tones that used to drive me nuts. It's still early so I do still have hope. I think I will keep the hearing aids (they are on trial loan to me until the 22nd) and who knows, maybe the t will calm down as my ears learn to hear sounds differently.
