Hi all

I'm James, I'm 27 years old and I'm based in the UK.

On the 14th January, I started to notice that I had loud hissing in my ears, and honestly I think this is my fault for listening to loud music on my daily work commutes.

I initially called 111 because I couldn't sleep and was in complete panic at the time (it doesn't help that I suffer from anxiety and panic disorder as well!) and saw a GP the very next morning. She said that my right ear (the loudest) was impacted with hard wax, and the left ear also had a substantial amount of wax in there as well.

A week later after softening everything up, I had my ears cleaned by the audiologist via microsuction. At that point, my tinnitus remained unchanged and I feared the worst has happened.

Went back to the GP today and they re-examined my now visible ear drums, one of them is red+sore and the other one has liquid behind it. I've been prescribed with Amoxicillin to get rid of the ear infection. (which I think I only just developed after the microsuction).

Anyway if your maths is spot on, I'm on day 10 now and absolutely scared that it's permanent. I'm sat in my bedroom with my desk fan on to mask the sound and I've binned my earphone and swore never to listen to heavy music again.

I don't think it's going to go away but I need help, my mum is supportive and my partner is there for me as well.

Thank you for reading.

You've gone through the steps that seem reasonable.
Give it some more time: it can take weeks for T to go away after an infection clears.

Good luck!

Thank you , I'm praying that it does, I can try and zone out and ignore it but it's worse at night where I'm losing sleep.

Night time is always the worst. It should improve in time and you are only 10 days in so it can still disappear. It's really crucial to stay well away from noise at this point as much as you possibly can. Don't overdo it but if you have to be in a noisy environment then earplugs are the way to go. Masking it with YouTube videos helps especially at night, there are some good ones if you type in Tinnitus Therapy. Crickets work wonders especially in the early stages where the intensity is always the worst. You're not alone, you're not weak or a pussy. It is a really shocking problem. No headphones ever again for sure no matter what happens.

Hah , it does calm down and I'm pretty sure there are crickets in my head :p and YES no more ear phones for sure!

So I'm on Day 11 and I though for a second it had disappeared .. there was just a faint hissing. A few hours later I tried to hear for it and whoops it's back in full swing now. :/

I'd take that as good news, actually.

I listened to loud music for a while too then a video on my computer triggered the ringing in my left ear.

Same day went to doctors and was told I had an ear infection (ear was swollen and inflamed). Ringing got worse so went back and was told that the infection had gone. I cried and cried and it was making me so depressed.

The ringing then faded and I didn't really hear it that much till Tuesday in the morning when it started in my right ear as well as the left and now it's just getting louder and more unbearable and it's making me so mentally ill.

I'm so f**cking scared it's unreal. My parents are telling me it will go but I reckon that's bs. I'm only 14. I don't want it forever.

I'm already having suicidal thoughts because of it. It's really getting me down.

And I know people say don't stress you will get used to it but seriously cmon I'm 14 and I have ringing in my ears. Do you honestly think I'm going to not stress and be calm about it. Like seriously. I might have it for rest of my life.

I don't want constant ringing in my ears for the rest of my life. It's killing me... I can't take it. I've had the constant ringing for 2 weeks and 6 days. Whenever I lie my head on my pillow the ringing goes side to side back and for. I really can't take it.

It's terrible trust me, mine is very loud and I lost a good chunk of hearing, best thing you can do at this point is wait for Neuromod.

Going to state the obvious, but no more listening to the headphones, and all audio at a minimal volume through external speakers. Also protect for any loud exposures.
