Hearing Problems — Does Anyone Have Trouble Hearing Over the Level of Their Tinnitus?

Hi, I am new here. I am curious. Does anyone have problems hearing over the level of their tinnitus?? I constantly have to ask people to repeat themselves. My son has extraordinary hearing, he can even hear dog whistles. I have to explain to him that I can not hear certain noises because they are not louder or are the same frequency of my tinnitus. I had a hearing test a few years ago and it showed mild hearing loss, but I struggle to hear people, particularly in crowded or large spaces.
I have had tinnitus for so long, I don't remember when it started. I seem to have all sounds associated with tinnitus; ringing, swooshing, pulsating, clicking.

Hi Julij33,
A warm welcome to Tinnitus Talk.
Hearing can be hard while your tinnitus is loud and fluctuating and I also find it hard to hear people and locate sounds.
I would have your hearing tested again as it's been a few years from your last one and if it becomes a big problem then you could see into wearing hearing aids.....lots of love glynis

I would be inclined to have another hearing test to see if your hearing has deteriorated, if it has then wearing hearing aids is the way forward and will help tremendously.

Thank you both. I also hate talking on cell phones. I actually avoid calls and prefer to text because I have trouble hearing.

I thought people with mild loss up to 8k were candidates for hearing aids?

When I saw the specialist he didn't seem too concerned. That was a few years ago, he did say I had hearing loss he just didn't feel it was enough to warrant treatment. After reading posts here and replies to my post, I am going to schedule another appt. I have never understood why people get upset when someone has to ask them to repeat something because they weren't understood.

I have a profound loss of hearing in one ear, along with tinnitus that gets louder around sound. It can be frustrating because the deaf ear does not only fail to work for me, it works against me! I just tell people that I have a hearing impairment and most people will try to help me by facing me and speaking more loudly and clearly. I'm glad that you are going to have your hearing retested. Let us know how that goes.

I would go get retested. If your T is in voice range (which it has to be if you can't hear people talk) a hearing aid could help you. Sounds pretty obvious you have more than just very high frequency loss!

I'm not saying it correctly. At that time I could hear people talking but had to ask them if they could repeat what they were saying because I could not understand the words correctly. T. was extremely loud at that time. I have (and I don't know if this is normal) hearing loss in the high frequencies in both ears but my right ear has trouble understanding what people are saying. My right ear gives me the most T. trouble. I first had a normal hearing test done and had it redone at another hospital where they also tested the high frequencies my ability to understand spoken words. I was told this could not be corrected with a hearing aid.
