Cause of Tinnitus
Not really sure
I have had tinnitus for years now, and I'm not really sure when it began or when I first noticed it. My ears have always had a lot of wax buildup and I suspect that the primary cause for my T was a misguided attempt at the health clinic I went to for ear wax removal back in the 80's. The nurse loaded up a big syringe full of water and started blasting away. Now I realize what damage could be caused by doing that, but back then all I wanted was an unclogged ear.

Over the years I now have substantial hearing loss. There was always a belief in my mind that any odd noises I were hearing were just part and parcel of the situation with my ears. There was a constant low level hissing, but low enough for it to be easy to just push the sound out of my mind. Three weeks ago it changed. Or maybe my acceptance of it changed. The low level hiss became a buzz that I could feel across the base of my neck. My only relief was sleep. Waking hours were spent fighting away panic attacks, as I fixated on the buzzing.

I then went through visits with an ENT specialist, a neurologist, and my GP. My GP found my blood pressure was through the roof (180+/80+). The stress of the buzzing was creating the perfect feedback loop for high BP. I had never had high BP before, but was given a prescription for medicines (BP and a Beta Blocker) to get the BP under control. She also prescribed Xanax for the panic attacks. The Xanax enabled me to get some sleep, and a bit of a control feeling over the panic attacks. The BP medicine has gotten my BP down to around 140/80, and the buzz is gone from the base of my neck. With exercise and diet, I hope to be back in the 120/70 range I used to be in.

Being here has given me additional insights and avenues for exploration. Things like no more earbuds, avoiding ototoxic medicines (the list seems endless), looking at the root cause of my stress, getting better hearing aids, etc. There is no cure, but I know I can adapt and cope.

Thanks for listening.

Hello @Dan RVA , and welcome.

I am glad that you are getting the BP under control. As you already know, stress and anxiety can exacerbate tinnitus symptoms. Many here have found that maintaining a positive attitude, which is seems you certainly have, helps alleviate the symptoms.

There are a number of posts here that provide examples of how a positive attitude can help:

@billie48 wrote his success story demonstrating how positivity helped him habituate.

@Michael Leigh wrote the following, excellent post on the importance of positivity:

and the following on negativity and tinnitus

If you have not, yet, come across this post, Michael Leigh has a number of very helpful posts. I would (and very often do) recommend you use the forum search function and seek out posts he has started. Here is one that will provide a lot of excellent information on tinnitus in general, and information on coping with it.

A friend of mind from this site has had success in the past with the method described in this post:

https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/back-to-silence.7172/

It may be worth taking a look as it may help you adapt and cope with it.

I wish you luck. I hope you are able to find what you are seeking here. And, please keep us updated on your progress.

I'm sorry your ears were syringed with water. Mine is caused by that too, only it was me trying to flush it out myself. Now I have really bad hyperacusis and tinnitus. I can't believe doctors still do it without at least warning people of the possible dangers. The ENT I went to a little while ago didnt think that it was even a likely culprit. Really lowers my trust in doctors. Wish you the best man.

Is there any safe way to get your ears cleaned?

hi Joel. I have had my ears vacuumed twice now. It is only slightly less unpleasant than the syringe. A lot less messier I suppose. I have tried drops in the past, the kind that were supposed to drain out the wax, but that never worked for me. It is funny how one person can have so much wax, and someone else it is never a problem.

First of all, don't let your ENT to syringe your ears as this would most probably make your tinnitus permanent. Instead, ask him to do it manually like my ENT did. If your tinnitus is caused by a wax build up, chances of recovery is pretty high but it will take a very long time. So, prepare for the ride.

So, like he said, I guess it can be done manually, which is much safer, though it will take longer. Definately worth it to prevent the hells of hyperacusis/tinnitus though.

Agree 100% I am now motivated to email my kids and warn them to never, ever, EVER let someone syringe their ears.

Good idea, I am going to be warning people as well. The ENT I saw a little while ago was dismissive of my insistance that it was caused by this, so I started to doubt it, but then I did some research and many people have had syringing make their ears cause (or make worse) tinnitus/hyperacusis. I can't believe that professionals are unaware of this and still perform the procedure. All it takes is to Google "syringing ears" to get warnings about it being unsafe.

Hi all,
I'm new here but have lurked on and off for a while.
My T is getting worse. I also have hearing loss and that is getting worse. My hearing aides are not working as well and I think that is also making the T sound louder.
The thing is it is making me mildly agoraphobic. I know I can control the noise environment in my home and so I feel safe there. This is really devastating to me as I love to travel and have been to about 150 countries. I canceled a month long trip to Australia for next month as I'm afraid to be away that long if my T gets worse. I actually cut a trip short to London (one of my favorite places) and came home early as it was so loud in the city.
I'm depressed and can't sleep without ambien. Even that only keeps me asleep for 3-4 hours.
I am going to my audiologist next week for a new hearing test and I know my hearing is worse. Hopefully stronger hearing aides will help.
I've been living with T since 2003 in my right ear and 2006 in my left. I use to love silence. I really want to cry as I am typing this. I was a very social, happy person. I was a successful sales manager before I retired. I was dealing with the T and enjoying my retirement. Now I don't as it's just gotten so bad.
I am hoping some of the new studies will have a breakthrough. My husband suggested marijuana and I've been searching info on that. I just feel helpless and hopeless.
Thanks for reading.

Hi all,

Hi Tsufferer,

I am sorry to hear of your distress. Every time I think I have it bad, I find people here that have overcome more than me. Hopefully their stories can help you in your struggle. A couple things, you may want to cut and paste this into a new "Introduce Yourself" thread. I am new at this, but I think you will get many more responses if you stand out on your own. There are really smart people here that may have much more to offer you. If not, look at all the links that Kolisar posted in response to my introduction up above.

All I can offer is my sympathy. Like you, I think my hearing aids need to be better/stronger. Like you, I have thought of marijuana (it is medically legal in Florida, where I can easily go). Like you, I get just a few hours of sleep, because once I wake, it begins. You are stronger than you think, and you can handle this.

All the best,

Dan
