Cause of Tinnitus
Loud movie using earbuds on airplane
Here's what I think happened to me, and what I've done so far...but I need some advice.

I have, for most of my adult life, had the very rare high pitched sound in my ears (almost like hearing electronics). It would go away after a few seconds, and I thought (stupidly) nothing of it.

Last September, while on a flight, I was using my phone with earbuds to watch a movie. The music track was very loud and the voices were lower, so I would have to constantly play with the volume. I was also sitting next to the engines, so the overall level was loud.

That night, I realized I had a ringing in both ears, almost equal (the left was, and is now even more than the right). I did some research that this might go away in a couple of days, couple of weeks, or couple of months. At times, the ringing was so intense (it varies from almost not hearing anything to very loud) that it once brought me to tears. It is also affecting my sleep and gives me almost a constant headache. Valium (courtesy of my wife, helps with sleep).

After giving it a couple of months (and trying Lipo-Flavenoids -- no change), I made an appointment with both an ENT doctor and with my neurologist (whom I had seen for non-diabetic neuropathy in my lower legs).

The first appointment I could get was with the neurologist. He did some office tests, suggested vitamin B2 for the headaches (typically used for migraines, which I have never had, but has helped) and scheduled a brain MRI.

Before the MRI was to take place, I saw the ENT doctor. He examined me and did an audio test which showed a left ear drop off starting at 3,000 HZ at 30 db, progressing in a steady curve to a 50 db drop off at 8,000 Hz. The right ear had a 25 dB drop off at both 6,000 and 8,000 Hz.

The ENT doctor suggested I stay with the Lipo-Flavanoids at least until 90 days and then see if I had any relief. He also did not see any need for the brain MRI, since I did have hearing loss that directly associated with the ringing.

So, me being paranoid, I'm wondering if I should get the MRI ($350). I should note that the neurologists really likes to order tests.

Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

An MRI would be a good idea if your T were to start for no reason. In your case, you know the reason. Also, MRI can be relatively loud, and this is the last thing that you need right now.

Check out the thread below where I summarize everything (26 tips spread over five posts) I learned about managing tinnitus after reading the posts on this forum for the past 12 months

First of all welcome aboard and it looks like you have covered the medical bases pretty well. I wouldn't go the MRI route for now unless those headaches stick around and get worse. . You can always reschedule it later. Glad you joined up as there is a ton of great info on this forum... Don't take anything I suggest as expert advice. I'm not a doctor however I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night. jk ;)
