At age 51 my tinnitus came on while sitting up in bed one night while watching TV (the day after returning from a fun trip to Tombstone, AZ , Oct 11, 2009). I asked my hubby to mute the TV as it was making a ringing noise.

But the ringing noise continued after muting the TV.

Made an appointment with an ear specialist in LA who ran an MRI on me to rule out a tumor and diagnosis me with tinnitus.

I had never heard of this medical condition prior to being diagnosis with it.

But when sharing with my social media friends I was amazed with how many people I knew that had it but had never talked about it.

Some days its noisy and aggravating and other days when I'm busy I hardy notice it.

Some mornings I wake up and don't hear it and think is this the day that it goes away? But after awhile it always starts its cicadas noise and I just live with it.

So glad however after reading others with lots louder ringing I count myself lucky I can tune it out most of the time.

Did you begin having these breaks from tinnitus right away, or is it something that had developed gradually over the years?

Welcome to the forum. This is so true. Many people seem to be able to tolerate even loud T and move on with life without needing support forum. I know of 2 ladies at church whose T is so loud they both said they sometimes can't hear what people were saying over her tinnitus. Go figure. Yet both ladies didn't talk about their T until I mentioned to them. They seem to live a normal life. Must have a different DNA. Lol.

Anyway, here is the success of a lady truck driver in mining industry who said 70% of the colleagues she talked to have T and she was surprised that none of them talked about it. So after knowing that, she said to T 'screw it' and didn't give in to tinnitus ringing anymore.

Did you begin having these breaks from tinnitus right away, or is it something that had developed gradually over the years?

I would say it gradually developed over the years. Just a side note that the breaks are just my brain helping me ignore the ringing. I actually can tune them out when I'm driving and doing active things with other background noises or talking to friends or people during the day. I love these days. Some days the noise is always there but I don't dwell on it. I told myself from the beginning not to dwell on it due to knowing so many people that have lots, lots worse illnesses and chronic pain to live with daily that dealing with my ringing ears is a minor thing compared to others.

I love your response! The lady truck driving saying "screw it" and went on with her life. That's all we can do if able. Mind over matter. Thanks for the link.
