Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown. Noise maybe?
Hi,

I've had tinnitus for about 5 months, but I keep getting new symptoms and sounds with my tinnitus. Now I seem to have some strange static like "hissing". I can hear it and feel it 24/7, no white noise masks it, and I can physically feel it.

It's somewhat like a faint 'sizzle'.

I've had it for a week on top of my regular tinnitus sounds.

It seems to get louder the longer I am awake.

Anyone else go through this sort of thing?

Does it feel like soda bubbles in your throat? Or when you swallow an icee.

That's what I have most the time. It's the easiest sound to deal with among the others I've experienced.

Sorta, it's more like high pitch loud hissing that leaves a very faint sizzle feeling, but it's probably the worst of the sounds I hear.

Yep, this kind of noise (static, hissing, kinda electrical) is exactly what I am dealing with. Mine is not faint. It is pretty significant. It never goes away, but at night when I am in a quiet bedroom it settles down a bit, and somehow I am able to get to sleep. When I awake in the morning is the time it is the lowest volume, but as soon as I get up it cranks back up. Any kind of noise in my house like even my wife talking, or doing anything in the kitchen causes it to increase in volume to a very uncomfortable level. I never go anywhere without earplugs in my pocket because outside noise (people talking, coffee shop sounds, virtually anytime I am inside a room with people talking or any kind of machinery noise) causes the tinnitus to spike dramatically..(hyperacusis). What a mess, but in only a few months I feel like I am adjusting quite well. When I describe my condition to people I know, they raise their eyebrows in shock and ask how I live with this. That's a good question. All I really tell them is that I have no other choice than to learn to live with it. There simply is no other choice. There's no "time out" with this scourge. I guess I am slowly habituating.

Wow, I go through something similar but probably not that severe. I also have hyperacusis so I know what that's like to live with, I really hope you find relief soon. Best of wishes.

Hey guys, I hope i'm not to late to this thread, but you are all describing what I have.

I got a static noise that has these high pitched tones in it and I can physically feel it. Like the sound is coming from my neck. I can't mask this and it's destroying me. I got tinnitus for many many years, but this new change is destroying me.

And the thing is it's most quiet when I'm awake and when I'm hearing any other external sounds this static increases. At the end of the day it's roaring in my head.

I have so many sounds including those you describe. I've come to accept having this and deal with it accordingly but when I step back and think about this condition, it seems like something straight out of the Twilight Zone.

I hope you are doing a little better with this. When my tinnitus hit me suddenly, is was a real shock to say the least. I really didn't know how I was going to live with it, this new invasion into my head. That was over a year ago. At this point I can say that I still absolutely hate it, but I have come to accept it. It is who I am now, and the little things that I do to help me get through life with the tinnitus have become pretty routine. It does take time. Best wishes.

Thanks for your kind words!

Now I'm doing fine, tinnitus is a horrible thing too have. I was just used to all my 3 tones. I was happy and content again. But suddenly a high pitched morse code came out of nowhere. It literally destroyed me and was depressive. But I've found out that I could diminish that morse code tone by massaging my neck, stretching it and sleeping on my back. I was really afraid I was getting new tones added to my arsenal, but actually my posture is creating it. So now I'm back at the stable 3 tones!

Thats great! My wife has been bugging me to try some head and neck therapy (I forget what it's called), and I think Im going to give it a try. Its very possible that the big accident I was in threw something way out of whack. But like I said before, my hearing in right ear is completely gone, so not sure if I hold out much hope.

I had experienced some hearing loss after sleeping on my side for 7+ hours. Normally I sleep on my back, because on my side my tinnitus spikes after 10 seconds and keeps spiking if I don't lay on my back. One day I woke up with + - 50% less hearing on my left side. Was very scared about it and took some prednison. At the end of the day when I was laying in bed on my back for 3+ hours (and not sleeping, because I was in full panic mode due too the hearing loss) and my hearing came back. So I'm not sure if it was the prednison or something else in my neck.

I'm not an expert, I tend to be hyperaware of my own body :D

How did your hearing loss develop?

This is exactly what is going on with my Tinnitus ever since an acoustic trauma on 4th of July from some idiot neighbor's fireworks. They sounded like bombs and I endured 3 of them. Now I have this loud hissing/sizzling sound going on 11 days now. Did anybody ever improve? Or how do you learn to live with this?

How did your hearing loss develop?
Davey, I was in about my 7-8th week of recovery from a terrible motorcycle accident ( 7 broken bones, w/compound fracture of Tibia, etc;)... and was sleeping when I suddenly awoke in middle of night to discover that I was now affected with serious tinnitus and hyperacusis, and also to find I was now completely deaf in my right ear. My ears were fine prior to this. That was about a year and half ago and there has been absolutely no improvement. I did all the tests (including an MRI), did all the treatment (including Prednisone orally and injected directly into middle left ear). Zippo,... nada. I am 100% deaf in right ear and have hyperacusis in left ear with major tinnitus on right side. The doctors really have no answer. There is nothing wrong with the mechanics of my ears. It is most likely some sort of brain injury with the auditory nerve. I'm learning to live with it.

Sorry this happened to you.
Did you get better?

@JohnFox This is exactly how mine is and it is also quite significant. I am trying to watch TV right now and the sizzling static coming out of my left ear makes it hard to hear the words and concentrate. It's been going on for a month, but just worsened 5 days ago. I honestly have no idea how I can get used to this and still hoping it goes away. Oddly I have no significant hearing loss. How did you cope, especially in the beginning?

A lurker here for a while. I signed up to add here.

I'm fairly certain that this type of tinnitus comes from the neck. I've had it for a while and physio said I may have slow motion whiplash. Try getting some massage therapy for your neck or acupuncture. Perhaps also yoga might help?

I have no hearing loss up to 8 kHz and I have this static in my ears, with the left one being louder than the right. When I lie down it becomes much more noticeable. I am afraid that it is something with an auditory nerve and that the treatments that are coming out are impossible for me.

Do you have hearing loss in one ear?

I have unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus in my left ear and it is more of a pure tone ring. It doesn't change. It happened a year ago. Strangely about a month after my unilateral loss, I developed this high-pitched his static noise. I hear it predominantly in my right ear although it can happen in my left but very rarely. My right ear is perfectly fine. The high pitch hiss hung around for most of the summer. Then it went away for the fall/winter months. And when I did have or last year, it was fluctuating wildly. One day it would be good and then 4 days it would be bad. It was vary tremendously throughout the day, but was mostly worse at the end of the day. And when it was really loud it would impact my ability to hear the TV.

Well it came back a week ago. It's been really loud. And really annoying. And I just had my hearing tested again in my right ear is still perfect. I'm wondering if it's allergies given that it started around the same time last year and hung around for the summer. There's been lot of pollen the last two weeks.

Just wondering what your experience and it it has been.has it changed at all?

Thanks.

My situation has not changed at all. It is permanent. Yes, I have complete hearing loss in my right ear with significant tinnitus on that same side. This all happened very suddenly one night while sleeping over two years ago. My "good left ear" has severe hyperacusis which causes the tinnitus on my right side to spike (hissing static noise). It sounds like you have some similar conditions although not exactly the same as my own. This stuff can happen in so many different ways. It is unique to each individual. There is no way of knowing if your condition will carry on the same as my own. All I can tell you is my conditions has not improved at all during the last two years. My coping with it has improved, so I guess I am habituating to it to some degree. I have accepted that I will have this the rest of my life.

Sorry you are experiencing this. It's no fun and very hard for people to understand what you are dealing with unless they have it too, like myself. I too have a hard time watching TV. My remedy was to purchase a very expensive Sony noise cancelling Bluetooth headset. I use this to watch TV and it makes it much more tolerable. I heave been using this headset for over a year with no ill effects. There's no telling if this would work for you, but it might help. If you aren't suffering from "hyperacusis" the headset may not make much difference.

Good luck.

Thanks. Feeling pretty down about it because it has been so loud today. I hear it over everything. I wish I knew why since I don't have hearing loss in that ear.

I'm pretty sure that the tinnitus (high pitched static noise) you are experiencing on your right side, is due to the hearing loss you have on your left side. Yes, my tinnitus is located on the same side as my deaf side, but you need to remember, in my case and likely in your case too, our tinnitus is not really due to the mechanics of our ears. It is a brain issue. My hearing loss is not because of some breakdown or failure in my inner ear, it is due to something happened in my brain, probably with the auditory nerve. It is a very complex area, and I'm not surprised that you experience tinnitus on the opposite side of your hearing loss. In my case, I also have severe "hyperacusis", where sound entering my left (good) ear, causes the tinnitus in my deaf right ear to spike. Like I said, very complex.

Again, I am confident that your tinnitus is mainly due to (or closely associated) to your hearing loss.

I don't have a deaf ear, but if I have an earplug in one ear and the other ear is exposed to noise, the tinnitus in the ear with the earplug gets worse.

Anyone else experienced this?

(I usually take the earplug off my ear to talk to someone and notice this happens.)

I've experienced this. I remember typing on a keyboard with one earplug only in my TTTS-ear, and my tinnitus would go a bit bonkers in it even though it had an earplug. I believe it's caused by some central sensitivity to sound, like the central gain is off in some way, but I don't know.

Has anyone had any improvements from this static hiss?
It doesn't disappear but I have better days and worse days.

I remember also having this hissing 9 years ago, when my tinnitus appeared for the first time. After about 2 years, I didn't hear it anymore for a long period of time (around 8 years).

So yes, I definitely had an improvement.
