How do you guys sleep?

I've had tinnitus and hyperacusis with painful ears for almost two weeks and it keeps getting worse.

The past three nights I have slept less than an hour each night. The doctor gave me a medicine which could help but I looked it up and literally everyone says it will make your tinnitus worse.

Doctor won't do anything else for me. I'm about to break down. Please help me sleep without making my tinnitus and hyperacusis worse

@Hidde ,
Melatonin can help and natural sleep aids.
Sleeping tablets can help only for a short while but In my view a low dose AD for sleep is better long term and easy to stop and under the therapeutic dose for depression.
It is finding what helps you and it could be as simple as playing sound therapy at night .
love glynis

Hello Hidde,

I was in the same situation some 2.5 years ago. It is most important to have a good night's sleep, especially for the patients with tinnitus/hyperacusis. In many cases, the hyperacusis develops because of the massive stress caused by tinnitus and consequently of the absence of good night's sleep.

Sleep has not been my friend. Most of my life I have had sleeping issues and it's been tough. What I have figured out is:

1.Your room/sleeping environment must look and feel comfortable. I use to have a room that was not comfortable for me and I slept on a uncomfortable bed for a LONG TIME. Horrible bed, gave me issues.

2.When you go to bed, your mind needs to be ready for sleep. Going to bed and over-thinking and being pre-occupied with thoughts is not helpful. I use to have this issue for the longest time.

These 2 elements are very helpful, if you want to sleep better....

As you exhale, just 'think' the word
'Deep.......'

As you inhale, think the word 'er...'

So: out - in........out - in......out - in
deep - er......deep - er.....deep - er

Melatonin. I have visual snow and severe tinnitus so I have a hard time falling asleep.

I wonder, what medicine has the doctor prescribed? I'm guessing Zolpidem (can also go by the name Stilnoct or Ambien). If the doctor won't prescribe you anything else then go to another doctor! It's important to have a good relationship with your doctor and if he/she won't listen to you then replace him/her.

Sleeping is key to getting better. And as far as tinnitus goes it does get better with time. There are many people here that can vouch for that. I think the same goes for H, but since I don't have it I can't really say, but from what I've read it does improve with time.

There are lots of medication that you can take that won't make your tinnitus worse. I have been on a few and still am on one. I see that people have given you a few suggestions such as Melatonin. They are giving you good advice. I myself have been on an anti-depressant called Mirtazapine (can also go by the name Remeron), besides lowering my anxiety, it also helps me sleep. Mirtazapine is a drug often prescribed to people having tinnitus just because it's very tolerable and doesn't cause tinnitus.

well fine by thinking I hope my tinnitus is gone in the morning

There is a chance it might do that. Tinnitus can disappear in any moment. There are stories of people having it for 30+ years and waking up one morning to have it be gone. The woman that owns the store where I bought my custom made earplugs told me a story about a man she treated when she was working as an audiologist that had tinnitus disappear after over 30 years. He actually became depressed because of it! Would you imagine that!?

But it certainly does happen that it fades away up to a year after onset. So for you it't not entirely impossible (since you've had it for a few months).

I use audionotch to mask a bit and to help me sleep. I have been lucky that this works for me.

Remeron helps also :p

Stress can really jack up my tinnitus and make my ears more sensitive to noise. My tinnitus is screaming right now after a stressful time earlier. I've had permanent increases in my tinnitus from severe stress alone.

We'll we'd have to investigate to see if it can relate to more hearing loss or more problems in the audiotory brain instead of jumping to conclusions.

Back when my T was at its loudest, I took 7.5 mg of amitriptyline (it is nonaddictive and it didn't make me feel drowsy the next day), and I used a sound machine for masking. I could still hear my T, but the sound machine provided other things for me to listen to, besides my T.

It is well known that about 40 % of sufferers with tinnitus (please see the www pages focused on hyperacusis) have also different types of hyperacusis (from mild to severe, with or without ear pain). There are many initial causes that trigger tinnitus, including stress. Some sufferers (not all) with a stress induced tinnitus have also hyperacusis. However, my friend has stress induced mild hyperacusis but without tinnitus.

It seems as it might be at least partially somatic then. Massage your neck, face and jaw to make those muscles relax and be careful with your posture if you have a job where you sit a lot and for long periods. I think it might help you.

I use a really loud fan right next to my head to help me sleep, sleep on my back as sleeping on my side causes the ringing on my pillow ear to be unbearably loud, exercise such as cardio a few hours before sleep will release some endorphins along with helping you physically feel exhausted, listening to a podcast to keep your mind off T until you fall asleep also helps.

I believe there is a perfect masking sound for everyone. All depends on your pitch. Go on spotify or youtube and search for tinnitus sound therapies. I found one that completely masks it on youtube.

Pillow speaker and Mirtazapine " Remeron" saved my life and allowed me to get my sleep schedule normal. I'm slowly getting of Mirtazapine at the moment, as i feel like i don't need it anymore.

I just turn on a fan and try not to let my left ear rest on the pillow and I sleep fine. But I also drink a little. I sleep fine. Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night to drink water or use the bathroom and my tinnitus is totally gone, and sometimes it will be gone when I wake up but it always comes back sometime during the day.

Mirtazapine is certainly a highly potent sleeping pill, even in small doses. But of course it's an psychiatric medication and not an esoteric sugar pill....

@Hidde I hope you soon find a way to get a good night sleep.

These three teas are what helps me the most. I use two teabags of Nighty Night with Valerian by Traditional Medicinals in a coffee cup. I also add one tea bag of Cup of Calm and one tea bag of Stress Ease with cinnamon.

So four tea bags in a large coffee mug of hot water and let it seep for about 15 minutes. I sip on it for about an hour just before bed time.

Sometimes if I wake up in the middle of the night because of stress situations I will pre-make a cup to just warm up.

I order my teas from Amazon because I got tired of driving to different stores. I usually get my delivery in a day or two.

I sleep with the TV on and have done for 6 years, I find watching the tv distracts me and eventually I fall asleep. If you don't think about sleeping, it just happens. :)
