How Long Until I Should Be Worried It Will Never Go Away?

Tinnitus Since

I'm 14 and about a month and a half ago a friend popped a water bottle next to my ear and I've had tinnitus ever since, how long until I should just stop hoping it'll go away?

Hi Matthew.

No one can put a time frame on it and I would be very wary of anyone that does.

I have now had tinnitus in one form or another since May 2014. Mine was not noise induced, so is a little different front many, but there remain many similarities. Initially, I would only hear it for about 30 minutes, every day as a roaring noise. This eventually progressed into a Morse code sound in my left ear and then into my right ear (all the while, still getting 30 minutes of roaring every day), getting louder and more intrusive - if you can think of a discordant sound, I have heard it. 9 months ago, it was so bad, I wasn't sure how I could possibly live with it.

However (and this is the bit you need to keep in mind), over the past 6 months, it has started to improve. Not because I am getting used to it, but the amplitude is slowly getting quieter and the number of sounds I hear is reducing. For more than 22 hours every day, I no longer hear the noise that used to be concentrated in my left ear, with it just appearing as a faint tinkle now and then in a room that is almost silent (usually when I first wake in the morning). Furthermore, I have periods where it disappears completely for an hour or so and even in a very quiet room, I cannot hear it in either ear (or centrally) at all. As such, no matter how bad it is or gets, no-one can tell you how it will progress.

We are all shaped by our own experiences, but my opinion is that there is no need to accept that it is for life, you just need to make sure it doesn't rule your life. I have never accepted it and it hasn't stopped mine from improving. Try not to focus on it (and I know from personal experience how hard this can be) and enrich your environment with quiet sounds, but do try to avoid noisy environments. If you get periods where it gets a little worse, I have found no disadvantage in slightly turning up the volume of the TV to better compete with it - obviously, it should not be deafening, but an extra couple of notches isn't going to do you any harm if it helps you deal with it.

Throughout everyone's life, their brain is constantly remoulding to changes in every single input from their bodies and hearing is no different. It is just that in some people and for reasons that are seemingly not fully understood, the brain tunes into certain frequencies of hearing.

Whether or not it is just coincidence I don't know, but I take EPA/DHA supplements and magnesium. Have they been instrumental in it improving? - who knows - but they haven't made it worse, so it might be worse a shot and they are unlikely to do you any harm.

Wait a year. Then it is almost impossible to leave. How loud is you Tinnitus from a scale 1-10?

Umm well, can you only hear it in silence? Or can you hear it being in traffic, while talking? A 10 would be if you can hear it all the time even when a truck is driving next to you. . A 1 would be if you can only hear it ain silence. Or can you hear it while driving you bike?

I'm only 14 I don't drive, but it can be masked and I only really focus on it at nights, hence why I am here

I would say that you have a fair chance that it may disappear or at least you will learn to totally ignore it. A level that is only noticeable in a quiet environment seems to have a much better chance of going - which makes sense.

It will take time though. People are used to the idea that an ailment can be sorted in a few hours, or a week at most. Sadly, this isn't one of those things. It takes a long time. the first tinnitus I ever heard in my left ear took 4 months to go from audible all the time to only in the quietest of environments and even then, only sometimes. Sadly, the noise that developed in my right ear used to be screaming - I could probably have heard it over a shuttle launch - but over the past 9+ months, it has become a lot quieter - on average.

I just wish I could know how long until it goes away.
@Matthew Perrotta Well the faster you accept it the faster you'll move on with your life. The T battle is a tough one and everyone has their own time table of acceptance just try not to be hard on yourself things will get better for you as time goes on.
Take care hope it goes away for you

I think if someone could tell you how it will progress, it would provide considerable comfort, but as I mentioned in a previous thread, you need to be very wary of anyone that claims to have an answer, as it is impossible to know.

Carlos1 is correct when he says you need to learn to live with it, rather than wait for it to go. If it does go, then brilliant and I hope for you that it does, but if it doesn't, then you haven't wasted your life waiting for it to go.

I know first hand just how hard it is though. Many times I have found myself getting really upset/stressed/angry/etc, but it does get easier in time.

I have one of these that I wear when it bothers me and/or on days when it is louder and it does help:

I find it strangely soothing, but it isn't for everyone.

No worries your young it will pass
You obviousely haven't spent the last 20 years clubbing or listening to loud music so you've got solid hair cells
Make sure to protect your ears when it's loud if not it won't go away so easily
Just forgetting about it isn't sufficent

Never stop hoping it will go away. Never! Do not deprive yourself of the healing powers of hope and of the placebo effect. I spoke directly with a person who suffered for years from T triggered by a toy gun and one day his T just stopped and never returned. Statistics about how many people get cured in that much time or how many get to be chronical sufferers mean nothing at an individual level. You may be the exception. You may lose a game in which your chances to win are 95% and win in a game in which your chances are 2%. Statistics are relevant only for people who are interested in the whole picture, with all the cases, for other purposes (reports, costs calculations, etc)

I've had it for about 8 months now, I hardly ever notice it, can sleep, can work, all nearly normal, I think about it like 10 minutes a day, like right now because I got an email from this forum! Stay off the groups and forums, it ain't that bad after a while!

How did the water bottle popped? Just wondering because we have no idea how loud it was.

But as you can even recover from a gun to your ears, and since you are very young your chances are fairly high.
DO DO DO protect your ears when you start going out, even if your friends are not doing it.
