Cause of Tinnitus
acoustic neuroma
My hyperacusis and chronic intrusive tinnitus started with a sudden hearing loss in left ear. I had tinnitus for many years prior but nothing like this. The hyperacusis the first time lasted 4 months and died down last July.

Today I wake up and it started in on me and was full blown with a couple hours. There was precursors as my tinnitus (I have 2 tones) had cycles of 2 bad days to 1 decent day. Past few weeks it went to 3 or 4 bad days to 1 decent day. My hearing feels a little muffled left side, with pressure coming and going in both with the constant ringing of tinnitus.

14 months of this tinnitus is wearing me down but sometimes I'm OK , it's a emotional rollercoaster . I thought I was habituating but it only took 1 relapse of H to send me back to darker thoughts. I find sitting in silence and reading more relaxing to the ears when hyperacusis rears it's ugly head. I'm just venting. I believe it will pass like last time.

My tinnitus has spikes that can last 2 to 3 weeks. That's what I'm hoping for... just a spike.

Does anybody else have hyperacusis spikes?

@Bobster59

When hyperacusis is treated by self help or using white noise generators, and it reduces in severity or completely goes away/cured. It shouldn't increase or return and the same applies to tinnitus. When hyperacusis or tinnitus increases exposure to "sound" is the usual cause. Do you listen to music through headphones even at low volume? Or go to places where loud music is played? Do you work in a noisy environment without using ear protection. Any of these things could cause your hyperacusis and tinnitus to increase. hey Michael , I do teach acoustic guitar twice a week for a hour at a time. I sometimes have a small T spike afterwards that will last an hour or two sometimes. I also mow my yard but use earplugs and ear muffs at the same time. I'm very careful not to expose myself to loud noise. The acoustic guitar is about it. It hits 75db on my meter. I will now read your threads.

Get immediately corticosteroids methylprednisolone or dexamethasone. It is an emergency, don't wait.

Take them for about 15 days, don't wait, the changes to be cured with corticosteroids are much higher.

I had sudden hearing loss and cured about 95-100% because i got high doses of corticosteroids in the 1st day.

HI Bobster,

Try following some of my suggestions to treat your hyperacusis and tinnitus in my posts above. If you aren't using sound enrichment at night, then I suggest you do. Please click on the link below and read my article: Tinnitus, A Personal View, that you might find helpful. The fact that you are experiencing a spike when playing the guitar even for a short while, is an indication that your hyperacusis and tinnitus needs to be treated.

All the best
Michael

Amazingly enough my T seems the same even though H has spiked. The first time with H my T was extreme.

Audiologist says I have moderate hearing loss. I'm due to go back.

I do listen to a sound machine at night. The rain noise sounds like white noise.

I live on SS. TRT is out of my range. I do subscribe to staying normal as possible but protect when I should. I am a veteran but live 80 miles away from treatment facility.

Thank you for your reply's.

Unfortunately I was diagnosed with meniere's today. The symptoms make sense now. I'm thankful I don't have it as bad as some people. It could always be worse is one of my motto's. One good thing that has come out of my last episode is my tinnitus pattern changed and I've been having more down time than spike time.
