Hyperacusis? Sensitivity?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if I indeed have hyperacusis or some sort of ear problem, whenever I hear the sound of aluminum foil crackling or medicine foil crackling a weird kind of quiet thud sound gets produced but it doesn't cause any pain or distress to me at all. The same occurs when I move around a bunch of ice cubes in a tray which causes the same thud sound. The thud sounds only occur at the same time that I am moving the ice cubes or crackling the aluminum foil. Do any of you guys have any idea what this could be?

TTTS - Tonic Tensor Tympani Syndrome.

I was going to ask the same !

I get a distorted sound in my hearing with old car breaks, not all of them but certain cars seem to make my ears flutter - I don't get any pain either ??

I think there is some kind of sound sensitivity going onto certain frequencies , and so I don't think this is full on Hyoeracusis either ?

@Tommi_boi

Hey I'm glad there is someone out there with some similar symptoms as I. I don't get any fluttering sensation or pain at all whenever these things occur, and I don't think I have hyperacusis either cause I can listen to loud sounds well without any reaction. Does your problem occur with metallic objects? For example, whenever I tap a ceramic bowl or a plate with a metal spoon it causes a weird vibration feeling in my left ear but it doesn't hurt at all. And whenever I crinkle aluminum foil it also doesn't hurt either but something in my ear mimics the pattern of the crinkling as a drum/thud like sound.

Ye I would say mine is pretty close to you , it's mostly with metallic objects but only higher frequency metallic objects.

Loud sounds are no problem either, I think what we have is sound sensitivity to a certain frequency / sound.

Yours is to metallic dishes like you say, and mine is to higher sounds because of that dumb ambulance !

I don't get any pain and loud sounds don't cause me problems either , but sounds like car breaks become distorted - not nice !

Same here, i get massively uncomfortable when certain cars break but my ears can withstand a 75-80db bar for one hour..
Also my left ear thumps to certain sounds, like putting a glas on the sink etc.
Keys and keychains usd to freak me out too, as they stood out on the streets. Could hear a person's keys from across the street on a busy to road. Also beeps at the supermarket, squeeky wheels from bicycles etc. Also certain stuff in television, like a swordfight in GOT would sound weird, almost 3d in a sense. Symptoms are getting less and less though. Now it's just the cars that are still annoying.
Maybe it's some form of recruitment?

Maybe it's some form of recruitment?

I don't think Its recruitment , it's a developing of hearing hypersensitivity from most likely acoustic shock.

Your ears simply regard high frequency sounds as dangerous and the muscles in your ear have spasms causing them to 'flutter ' - that's an answer I got from a hearing specialist for mine as my own H came from standing next to an ambulance siren go off.. .

Funny, Sebastians I know EXACTLY what you mean with keys and for me it was even metallic zips off women's handbags and people's rucksacks.

My own H I feel has improved too, although the occasional car break still gets me though .

I am now soo careful when I'm out , I'm literally looking behind my shoulder for sirens from cops and especially ambulances - here in London they are too loud.. isn't it Ironic that an ambulance injured me - or my hearing to be precise

I have slight hyperacusis and my left ear also vibrates/flutters when it is quiet and sounds are coming from my right side.

I had a one week period where I couldn't sleep, where my ear would completely go on the fritz and flutter like crazy when I was about to fall asleep. It was quite hellish. I've been referred to an ENT but not sure if I should go and get this vibrating/fluttering/hyperacusis thing checked out.

Has anybody here gotten better from this?

From hyperacusis? I had hyperacusis in October of 2017 for two weeks from overprotecting. After I did the caloric test/VEMP in January I developed Severe Hyperacusis, but only on one ear, which was the most tested. I didnt improve one bit and here we are almost approaching July.

@dpdx sorry to hear that bro. What is the caloric test? Never heard of it.

So Caloric test is like ear irrigation, like for ear wax removal.
VEMP is a very loud test where they put electrodes near your cochlea and emit a sound 110db loud, its done to see how the vestibular system works.
They caused me to have mild-moderate hearing loss. Its crazy how damage is incurred quickly, now I am dealing with dark eye floaters and looking at computer screen is hard. I also am starting to see analog tv at night in front of my eyes, well in the darkness, but I dont see it during the daytime. Be careful man......tinnitus is not ear damage, but from what I can tell brain damage.
