I Took Off the Noise-Canceling Headphones. The Pressure Drop Gave a Spike.

Hello!

Today I put on special noise-cancelling headphones when the neighbors made repairs, but then, when my phone rang, I somehow very quickly took them off, although I usually take them off carefully, so I felt the pressure drop on my eardrums.

Could this really hurt my ears? How do you think? It looks like the spike has started after that.

It could probably hurt you if you were to do this many times. Otherwise the worst that might happen will probably be a temporary spike.

Are these the ones on the image you posted? They don't seem to have active cancellation - they look like plain ear muffs?

Doubt it.

Those are ear muffs, they passively cancel noise. They are not active noise canceling headphones like Bose QC35.

Just wanted to post that because inevitably one day an anxious poster will find this post and erroneously panic that noise canceling headphones cause ear pressure damage.

It's doubtuful that those ear muffs were so tightly sealed on your head that removing them caused a pressure change. If anything, the quick volume change is probably what startled you.

No, it did not affect membranes or internal cells. Removing the earmuffs likely just made a muted environment suddenly seem louder.
