Yup I have read many posts on going to movies and I hate to make another one.

Any idea how loud the dB range is in the theatre?

Use ear foams, they are cheap and very effective. Give it a try, if it becomes too much you can leave. At least try, because if it goes well you won't think about this in the future whenever you are going to the movies. You'll just get your ear foams and see whatever you like

@Raphael7713 @Fangen im in NY...i got custom musician plugs and i have been to 5 weddings this year including my own but i read online that some movie theaters can go up to 118 db and i know star wars has a reputation for being loud. I will definitely stay away from IMAX. Do you think 15db reduction is ok or should i go heavy duty 30 db?

I hear ya! *no pun intended* Since my T started I already skipped two movies I wanted to see(Thor and JL). I am NOT missing out on Episode 8 though! I don't feel like my ears are sensitive really but I'm guessing I should still be careful. I have some ear plugs ready that, iirc, are rated for up to -18 db reduction. Hopefully that's enough. I think I'll give the theater a call too and see if they have a good idea for how loud it might be. You should try doing the same.

I saw episode 7 in a theater, the only time I've taken a dB meter to one. Average was ~70-76 during quieter bits, ~82-86 during shootouts and a couple spikes to 92 or so.

Nothing very worrying; I wore silicone plugs for comfort, but I wouldn't have been especially concerned about the risks of not doing so, unless I was planning on going to 2 movies a day for months straight.

Thank you for posting this! I went to a movie with my children shortly after losing my hearing. Everything seemed too loud at the movie, but then again everything everywhere I went seemed too loud.

One piece of advice for anyone going to a movie, previews are shown at a higher volume. Something about trying to get our attention. Consider slipping out during the previews.

@Tinker Bell I was curious enough to bring a meter because I'd seen a claim online in an article that an IMAX showing of Transformers had clocked in at ~9odb avg and 120db peaks. If that's true, there's a tremendous variation between theaters, and that would imply that some of them are literally loud enough to do significant damage from a single movie.

I take that with a bit of a grain of salt, though; I don't think the average moviegoer would enjoy, or even tolerate, 120db spikes, that is at the pain threshold for most people.

Volume definitely varies. I remember pre-T I went to go see The Good Dinosaur. The movie was so loud I had to ask an employee to lower the volume and they did so.

I think it's a bit out of hand. There is no reason to blast Good Dinosaur, or any children's movie. When I went with my kids to see a kids' movie, I asked the theater employees to turn it down. They did and one of the other moviegoers thanked me.

In my area there are special showings once a week at some theaters where the volume is not as loud and the theater is not as dark. The original intent was for children with autism, but then I learned that a theater near me once a month shows a matinee like this for adults too.

I went and saw the star wars movie last xmas. The movie wasn't loud until the fighting/action sequences. I highly suggest that folks, take some good ear protection..if they want to see it. I'm seeing the latest one, when it comes out

Just saw it today. I used Etymotic ETY-Plugs. I pulled one out of my ear at points during the movie just to gauge how loud it really was. I guess it was fine but I felt like it was too much to take for 2.5 hours.

The plugs worked fantastically though! I could still hear everything, even people eating or talking around me. It was just like I turned the volume knob down. The plugs definitely take some getting used to. I fidgeted around with them during the movie as they felt a tad uncomfortable but after awhile I didn't even really notice them. My T seems completely unchanged so far, so the plugs did their job in protecting my ears I'd say.

As for the movie, my wife and I liked it a lot. I dunno if it's really as good as 7 but it's got a lot of cool scenes in it.

I did not like it I agree that it had a lot of good scenes, but what the heck was that casino scene and the "save the animals" theme. Also the relationship between Finn and Rose was awful. I liked the star wars 7 too!

I am still too afraid to go the cinema and if I go I don't wanna be bothered by deciding if this scene was too loud or if I need muffs for this or that car chase.

I saw it yesterday, using my 18db reduction musician earplugs. They did the business. I think the film was louder than some of the others I've seen in the cinema, I guess it just depends on the film!

I have never seen a Star Wars movie, and I don't intend to see this newest movie. But I keep seeing people mentioning that "casino scene". What is it about that scene that got the viewers' attention?

I think the problem people had with it is that it just feels out of place? I mean it's not like there isn't a reason for having it, but I guess people feel like they just stuck the related story line in there just to give a couple characters something to do. Otherwise they would have been sitting around doing nothing.

There are some things that seemed kind of pointless, and there are def a couple plot holes, but if you just sit and watch what's going on I think you will enjoy the humor and the action. I can see why people would give it lower ratings but the people that are going insane giving it 0-3 outta 10 I think are just the super dorks who had their own fan theories and didn't like the things they did. The whole, "I would did it this way!" nerds. As for a rating I'd give it a 6 or 7 outta 10. I think I gave episode 7 an 8-9 outta 10, but that's mostly cause it flowed better and it had been so long since we had brand new SW.

I won't give anything away but with all the sci-fi I have seen in my life I was so excited to finally see someone do something I have been dying to see in a sci-fi movie/show! It's maybe 2/3rds of the way into the movie? You'll probably know when you see it.

Anyways, if you're on the fence you should def see it. At worst it is NOT as bad or awkward as episode 1. I mean c'mon, little kid Anakin in that movie was so fucking cringy... I shudder just thinking about it.

I gave the new star wars in IMDB first 7 out of 10 and then lowered the rating one day later to 6. I was really disappointed with that movie. I gave the force awakens a 9/10. I really liked it!

LOUD. Last movie that I saw was start wars and it was really loud, even my friends said it was loud in their opinion, BUT I used earmuffs and earplugs and I was fine. I got a small spike that lasted for one day, so if there is a movie anyone of you want's to watch I would recommend buying earmuffs and using earplugs underneath them.

Oh I forgot, that the earmuffs that I have are x5a peltor, yeah they are HUGE but they give a good protection. They are handy also in other situations for example I use them in airplane and thank god that I used them on new years ewe. I really recommend buying this model.

Since I recently got a Bose 535 Lifestyle system for 1/2 price, I rent a RedBox Blu-ray for $2 for the evening and it's better than the theater on my 65" 4K TV.

I'm able to equalize the sound in the room and it sound phenomenal compared to a boomy theater. No more hurt ears or need for plugs.
