I Want to Share My Story of How My Benzo Induced Tinnitus Went Away

Okay, so a bit out me is that my whistling tinnitus was originally lowered by Klonopin and that is why I took it. If I remember correctly, after taking Klonopin for 2 or 3 years every day I decided to cut the dose in half and/or skip a day. That was a messed up idea because I think that is where I got static type tinnitus. It was hard to stop taking Klonopin because of my tinnitus because it would affect my mental state when I dropped but at the same time it messed me up mentally to take it because I knew it was causing the static and I felt if I got off of it, I could get better... I finally was able to find 3 things to help me come off Klonopin.

1. Lamictal and Trileptal combo for a few weeks or so
or
2. Lamictal and Neurontin combo for a few weeks or so

I also sometime added in Magnesium glycinate.

I finally switched to NAC and Lamictal for a couple of weeks or so.

I can't remember when the static was all gone exactly but I think it was after a while of being off Klonopin and taking one of those combos. I was able to wean off very quickly with those meds used because I was on such an extremely low dose. You would have to talk to a doctor for a plan on how to do it if he was to say it was okay and you wanted to do it.

However, since taking NAC and Lamictal or the other combos, I would have low whistling days and bad whistle days... well, I had a bad whistle day and for some stupid reason (I think I was trying to get to sleep) I took .5 mg Klonopin for two days and some Melatonin and it came back (could have been after I slept, can't remember - I also can't remember the day).

Anyways, I took it a total of 3 or 4 times this week (long story) but hopefully I can get off of it like before and it will just be the whistle again. I still haven't found a great way to consistently lower the whistle as of yet...

I just wanted to tell you this to give you hope that your Klonopin induced tinnitus from withdrawal/tolerance CAN go away. :)

Hi Jason, I see you posted this back in 2017.

I am currently struggling to get off of Klonopin. I have been on antidepressants steadily since 2000 and benzos for at least 15 years. I suspect these medicines caused my tinnitus and now trying very hard to get off the Klonopin and hoping the tinnitus will subside eventually.

Were you successful getting off the Klonopin and did your tinnitus get better?

I've been off benzos for over 3 years but my main tinnitus I believe came from taking Wellbutrin for 5 days. I believe at the time I had more norephinephrine than most people due to my dysautonomia which I didn't know I had at the time. Upon taking Wellbutrin, it raised those levels higher and that is what I believe gave me tinnitus. That tinnitus hasn't gone away but on some days it seems to be fairly low.

As far as the benzo induced tinnitus, I think that has pretty much gone away. I also have a noise induced tinnitus which on most days I don't seem to hear because of the regular tinnitus covering it up. Right now I am taking Corlanor for my dysautonomia which may be helping my tinnitus some, but I am not sure yet.

I found out that I on some days, something was causing my testosterone to be low. Maybe stress was doing it and I also found out I was Vitamin D deficient. I am thinking about supplementing with Vitamin D to see if it will help me but I'm not sure what, if anything, it would do to my tinnitus while on Corlanor.

You have started this thread years ago but I decided to write anyway. I am (slowly) tapering off benzos after long term use.

My tinnitus started after I attended a music festival. Without earplugs, stupid me.

During benzo taper I haven't had tinnitus and that music festival three weeks ago basically triggered it. I believe the fact I was going through benzo taper at the same time played a part why tinnitus started. It has made me more sensitive to sound and I had some level of hyperacusis even during the taper, no tinnitus though. After that gig it has been worse and this tinnitus is a new symptom.

I am afraid that because I got noise induced tinnitus during benzo withdrawal, it is not going away and that benzo withdrawal will make healing from noise induced tinnitus impossible.

It is great you have managed to stop benzos. It is so difficult! And comforting to hear that you feel like your benzo induced tinnitus is better.
