Hi all

My baseline tinnitus has just gone louder out of nowhere I was just sitting watching TV, relaxed, and then my tinnitus just went louder? Really confused and scared right now.

Don't know what to do as I'm unsure why this has happened, normally when it goes louder for no reason it's due to fleeting tinnitus but it's not that and doesn't seem like a spike?

Please help as I'm really worried.

I have had this happen. I felt as shocked as you are feeling now. I was lucky and it was gone the next day.

It makes sense to panic only if it doesn't fade within the next couple of months.

This literally happened to me yesterday. I have made a thread about this as well.

https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/anyone-experience-fleeting-tinnitus-like-this.32116/

My ear gets an intense fullness feeling that I can't get rid of with increased tinnitus in the ear it happens in. It takes a lot longer to fade than regular fleeting tinnitus, but in the 3 times it has happened to me it always goes back to baseline. The time it happened yesterday I feel it is still settling down.

I have no idea why this happened but would love to know. Someone once mentioned it could be ETD.

@Sarah200 Can you go into more detail about what happened?

@Bill Bauer did you have ear fullness?

Majority of times tinnitus can and will get louder for some underlying reason. Whether its the volume/sound levels of an stimulus or environment. Whether it's our fear/stress/paranoia of an stimulus. whether is an internal conflict in our system caused by an illness/meds/physical pain..etc

Always keep a log and journal your daily habits and see what hurts and what helps. Even though you may have done nothing but just watched tv, something else could have triggered it off. My tinnitus is so loud to the point that it's a daily/lifetime spike that never ends.

It can get even crazier and it can throw off folks that do not know how to handle such intrusive and nasty tinnitus. It's all about calming down and slowing down that mind. The mind is going to panic and can possibly send fear that will disrupt our thinking and actions. Slow it down, relax, calm down. Breathe in and out and just regain control.

I been at this for 30 years, majority of the time something is causing the spike and noise increase. Journal your habits and keep what helps, remove what triggers.....

@Jack Straw when I have fleeting tinnitus I get the weird ear fullness and it slowly goes by the next morning, I also have fleeting tinnitus where it only lasts a few seconds without the fullness.

I only just found out yesterday from my GP that I have ETD.

Maybe it was a fleeting tinnitus as it's slowly going now but I don't have the fullness though.

What happened is I was watching The Chase with my mom and we were having fun answering the questions and then suddenly it went really loud in my right ear only, I immediately panicked and went upstairs to my room to calm down. Thinking about it maybe it was fleeting tinnitus but I just did not have the fullness this time?

As the new sound was exactly like what I normally get with my fleeting tinnitus? Could it have just been fleeting tinnitus but without the ear fullness?

If it was a spike I can only think of stress as I have been stressed for the past three days due to a massive fallout with my sister which is now sorted and then the past two days due to my grandma being in hospital as she had a fall and hit her head so I have been very worried about her and stressed and tense.

@fishbone thank you for your advice, that's what I did after I posted on here was go to my room and calm down as I know stress can make things worse. It's still louder than normal but has gone down to a much better volume and the new sound has nearly gone so I'm optimistic it will be gone by morning which makes me think it was fleeting tinnitus and not a spike but I have had a stressful past three days so could be the stress.

I'm just glad it's going down. I have also turned my TV down, the only other thing was that I had missed my morning dose of my antihistamines as I'm supposed to take 2 a day and I notice my tinnitus is quieter when I have my antihistamines.

@Jack Straw just read your thread in the link, what you described for both your normal fleeting and abnormal fleeting tinnitus is exactly what I experience.

Do you get the clicking noise when you swallow? I get this clicking noise everytime I swallow.

That could be it. So the doctor said you have ETD? did you discuss with him these episode of more intense "fleeting" tinnitus?

My GP is not sure about why this happens with fleeting tinnitus.

I have just had a fleeting tinnitus moment but the type that only last a few seconds so that makes me think it was definitely a not normal fleeting moment earlier, flipping heck 2 fleeting episodes in one night. On Monday night I had the ear fullness thing but without the fleeting tinnitus.

Interesting

Thought I would give you all a update especially for those who helped like @Jack Straw @fishbone @Bill Bauer,

This morning the new sound I had last night has gone and my baseline tinnitus is just slightly louder in both ears but I think that is due to my nose be blocked up.

I'm doing some steaming later to help unblock.

Had a few fleeting tinnitus episodes today in my other ear, I wonder what is going on?

Fleeting tinnitus is not dangerous because fleeting Tinnitus can't become permanent?
