Tinnitus Since
2013
Cause of Tinnitus
stress, benzo/clonozepam + clonidine, maybe infection
Just want to know how many people have been improved after tinnitus worsening due benzo withdrawal. :(

It worsened, sharply, to the point of my barely being able to cope with it; this happened in mid-April, so, only two months ago.
I'm hoping it is going to settle down, considering resumption of an anti-depressant, but against my instincts (so bad is the tinnitus)

It'd be helpful to share how long you have been taking your benzo for and also what type it was.

One old guy in this thread says that during 10 years since benzo withdrawal his tinnitus went down ware he didn't even notice it.

Yes it will get better. Your brain`s inhibitory system has been downregulated due to your benzodiazepine use. When you quit, the nervous system becomes overactive, causing withdrawal symptoms. The auditory part of your CNS is no exception to that. Benzodiazepine withdrawal does not cause any direct problems with your ears, so to me it seems highly unlikely that it could change your T permanently.

I remember having crazy loud tinnitus when I quit clonezepam and also when I quit drinking after a period of drinking way more then I should. Both times, it cleared up within a month or two.

It was horrible the first month or two. It's back to tolerable and seems to spike before I menstruate and go back down again. I struggle sometimes but always try and stay calm while the medication leaves your body.

Benzodiazepines leaves the body from 12 hours to a week maximum, regarding which you take. But the spike is still there for for some people.

I would be glad to hear people who are at least 1-10 years after w/d, is there someone like that in this forum?

Yes, as far as the static tinnitus I got from benzos go. Unfortunately, I was actually using benzos to lower my original tinnitus and it seemed to stop working and gave me the static T in addition the original T. I was able to have a few things work on the static T. One is Lamictal but that seemed to be stimulating going through benzo withdrawal. Sometimes melatonin would help but that too could be stimulating. Finally, after being off of most of it, I tried a drug called Riluzole which works to lower glutamate. When I took 100mg of it, it got rid of my static T after I took a small bit of klonopin. Sometimes sleep would reset this static but it I was able to use it again and it worked and finally it went away. It seems like now that klonopin can cause some static T sometimes if I take it.

Did you mean taking of Klonopin and then Riluzole got rid your static?

Well, sometimes if I take klonopin, I can get a static type tinnitus. Each time I took 100mg of Riluzole it went away. I think normally they say take 50mg twice a day but I accidentally took 100mg thinking they were 25mg tablet because of a medication I took in the past had 25mg tablet. It was really stupid of me and I found out my mistake in less than two days.

Unfortunately, when I first starting weening off klonopin and a long time afterward I didn't have Riluzole to try.

For what did your physician prescribe you Riluzole? I believe most of today's physicians still do not think about the effect of glutamate receptors on tinnitus.

Well, sometimes a physician or psychiatrist will prescribe it for off label use for OCD or depression. Unfortunately, some won't. The trick is finding one that will. Honestly though, I was on such a small amount of Klonopin when I tried it for the first time that I don't know how it would act if I was taking a large dose. I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has tried it.

Are you from Finland?

It`s not the drug causing your tinnitus, it`s the drug not being your system causing it. That why it lasts so long after quitting. It has been 5 years since my Klonopin withdrawal and like I said, everything went to normal after a couple of months. This also went for my other withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, lack of appetite, trembling and trouble sleeping. But iirc, tinnitus was the last symptom to settle down for me.

Almost exactly, because the drug not being in your system causing spike. But there are those who develop T while on benzo, my first T begun while I was 7 days on benzo and spiked 5 years later on benzo w/d.

There are people I read on BenzoBodies who more than a year after the w/d and still have spike, because that I asked to hear also those who are longer time after the w/d.

I am going through benzo w/d too and my T has been louder for months now. I still have 12 weeks to taper for a taper total of 7 months. I am so fed up with it though. And I was always very careful with benzo use but my docs were just amateurs it's a long story. But I am praying so hard that it will turn back to baseline. But because it has been months and I still have months to go it feels so permanent.

I am starting to see how my T started exactly one week ago! A week ago Sunday was my last day of clonezepam. 48 hours later, I wake up with T! I just found 6 1 mgs. I have an appointment with an ENT next Tuesday. I was in the ER this past weekend due to horrifying side effects from phenibut. The ER doc said since I was having such a hard time sleeping and I never abused it, why not go back on it. I had been on clonezepam for 25 years for chronic insomnia. It worked great for me. I never had a problem until I weaned off of it.

@DaneV @Emster I was taking .5 clonezapam to help with monthly spikes of my tinnitus to which I had habituated too since 2001. Due to going through a stressful period I starting using it nearly nightly for a few months not for tinnitus relief but to aid with anxiety and sleep. STUPID ME!!!! now the clonezapam stopped working and I was thrown into withdrawal as my body wanted more of this drug to keep working for me. I have been switched to valium and low dose tegretol to try and taper right off this drug rather than taking more of it to give me relief. At first nobody new what was wrong with me blaming increased anxiety for my insomnia, increased anxiety and my brain shaking violently at night. I was told just stop trying to take the clonezapam full stop as I was still trying to take a 1/4 of a .05 tablet but within an hour I would have severe burning in my back and chest. Lucky I found a Dr who stated its not anxiety but withdrawal from the drug... I have used clonezapam on and off since 2013 but only on a regular basis the prior 4 months to suffering these horrific symtoms. The worst for me is the the screeching tinnitus in both ears since being placed on 7mg a valium a day it has decreased slightly but it is still horrific. I also feel depersonalization, cant concentrate and my husband has to give me constant direction otherwise I stand in the one spot beating myself up for causing this problem to myself and family. I believe DaneV has withdrawn from klonopin as you call it in the USA did this eventually settle and return to its baseline for you. I am so distressed at the moment thinking I will never be the old me again....Plus I have been told I need to taper slowly off the valium which I hope helps with withdrawal symptoms.
