Intermittent Tinnitus

Hi @Michael Leigh! Do you still have intermittent tinnitus? Have you been able to habituate? Have any supplements helped? I was advised to try NAC. I'm unsure if I should try meds like Klonopin? Thank you in advance! I'm having a difficult time trying to figure this out.

HI @LilSass

I have variable tinnitus that ranges from: complete silence, mild, moderate, severe, and very severe. I have habituated and find Clonazepam/Klonopin very helpful at reducing my tinnitus when it is severe. I was prescribed it in 2010 and touch wood, never had a problem with it. It shouldn't be taken too regularly. Please click on the links below and read my posts: My experience with tinnitus and The habituation process.

I find St John's Wort can help with managing stress and it is herbal. I have been taken Gingko Biloba for a long time. It can help improve hearing and some people say it helps tinnitus.

All the best
Michael

@Michael Leigh
Thank you so much! Although I enjoy the quiet days I worry that I won't be able to habituate, so I'm happy to hear it's possible. I'm currently doing an onlune mindfullness course & cbt through a counsellor - here's hoping things get better.
Have a great night!

I woke up last night after 1 hour 15 minutes sleep, went to the bathroom, and there was no tinnitus present at all. This is very rare, in my case. Except for a very few times like last night, I always have tinnitus upon waking, even after dozing for a few minutes in a chair. The tinnitus returned when I got up for the day. Perhaps the sleep cycle was just at the right level.
Hi @Luman,

I assume you are well habituated since all of your recent posts are on the 2020 Election thread lol.

I seem to be on the same sort of pattern, with 1 day with very mild tinnitus (stays that way all day), then 2 days very loud tinnitus. I had a couple of questions if you don't mind answering?

1. How loud is your tinnitus on your "on" days?

2. How long did it take you to habituate to where your days seem the same regardless of the noise?

3. What does your tinnitus sound like?

I'm hoping mine will fade, but since it's been about 5 months and not much fading naturally I'd like to know your opinion.

Thank you!

@BrysonKingMe - I have the same type of intermittent/variable/fluctuating tinnitus. Some days it's low and some days it's loud. Very often, it occurs on the day boundary--whatever I wake up to is what I get for the day, as if my tinnitus flips a coin in the night.

When it's low, it's primarily reactive tinnitus. When it's loud, it's like a high-pitched hiss. Sometimes it's somewhere in the middle. But whatever intensity, it's pretty much like that the whole day. Anxiety-inducing not knowing what's going to happen the next day. I've been wanting to know whether anyone has this pattern of fluctuation.

Hi,

I will try to answer your questions as best I can.
How loud is your tinnitus on your "on" days?
It is loud enough to be heard over music that is at 66-70 decibels at the listening spot.
How long did it take you to habituate to where your days seem the same regardless of the noise?
It took me about two years to start to feel very comfortable with the condition, and this improved further, since then.
What does your tinnitus sound like?
It's like a high-pitched static most of the time, with an occasional new steady tone once in a while, but these new tones only last for a few minutes and are not bothersome.

I don't think that the tinnitus volume really matters much, for most people, after a while. When the subconscious brain realizes that it isn't a threat, it begins to ignore it, more and more over time.

Good luck, the odds are very high that you'll habituate as well.
