Is Hearing Loss-Induced Tinnitus Stable or Can It Fluctuate?

So basically I'm holding onto all hope that my tinnitus isn't (at least solely) caused by the *minor* high freq hearing loss in my right ear.

The thing is, although it is constant, it seems to fluctuate occasionally, and I know it's physiological and not psychological. I'll be lying in bed, and all of a sudden will have a minute of near-silence, no matter how hard I listen for it, and then suddenly it's exceptionally loud again. Can this happen if it's induced by hearing loss?

If yours is hearing loss-induced, is it constant or fluctuating?

My tinnitus is most likely caused by hearing loss since I have loss in the high Freq. range and all other causes have been ruled out.

My T does fluctuate in loudness and varies from ear to ear on a daily or even hourly basis.

Hi Relic Hunter, may I ask what other causes you've ruled out?

I have had so many tests. MRI, CAT, blood work etc, that I cannot remember. However nothing shows up abnormal except hearing loss. However my hearing loss is the same today as it was 20 years ago and at that time I did not have tinnitus. My tinnitus started about 10 to 15 years ago and at that time was mild and mostly in one ear. It has worsened in the last 4 years but hearing loss has remained the same. It got worse during a period of extreme stress.

Thanks for that. It's good to hear that the tinnitus wasn't originally present with the hearing loss, which means there's a good chance it's not related. Such a frustratingly elusive problem. I hope yours gets better some day.

Hey Melina, I too can vouch for the same. Musician with tinnitus for years before any noticeable hearing loss. The hearing loss seems for many to occur later, as the source of the original T is continued. Meaning - in my own case - that had I reduce the volume when playing I may not only have stopped having T but might not have lost a percentage of my hearing. I often played gigs - we're talking 60's Hendrix - and had T afterwards but that disappeared not long afterwards. Because I continued to play, over the years the T stayed longer and finally it became a permanent feature! I've lived with it so long it seldom bothers me. There are plenty of "Natural Remedies" on the net, which I've become interested in lately. None of them appear dangerous in any way - and it's gotta be worth a try! There are quite a few foods too - Google for "Natural Remedies for Tinnitus" and you'll be surprised!
Best of Luck.

@Uniqdzign hey man, you mentioned that after each gig your T remained but after a short period it went away? how long did they last?

I recently had a big sound blast in my ear and its been 2 weeks..still naively hoping it can go away

In ear headphone loud music for 2 hours.

While at first it stopped, i continued listening to headphones for 1 more day, at half volume...by the third day i got T full 24-7 till now.

Good to know it can get better! im almost on 3 weeks and still no improvements tho..

Mad, Im gonna do the hearing test again next week.

really hoping that my hearing loss recovers, I really hope its not some permanent damage..since if hair cells are destroyed i think they cant recover.
