Cause of Tinnitus
Loud club
Had tinnitus onset from going to a club 9 days ago. The first 3 day were hell. Ever since it's been changing volume, sound and ears. The past 2-3 days the sound has been so low I don't notice it unless I plug my ears or purposely listen for it. I'm even managing to sleep with my ear on the pillow with a fan on. Is it going away ?

Avoid loud noises for at least 3 months
Wear plugs in restaurants , trains etc..
No clubs even with plugs for a while

I agree, I'm managing to forget about it day to day when I'm outside and if I'm in a silent room i do hear it but it's not so loud where it bothers me too much. Hopefully it doesn't get any louder.

I'm in a similar situation at the minute @orbiter12. I've been a sax player for the last 9 years playing without ear plugs and had no issues before, but last Sunday evening (19/3) I attended a band rehearsal that was in a much smaller room than I was used to with a band that played much louder music than I'm used to for 4 hours, then got into my house to find my ears ringing very loudly but I thought it'd go away. When I woke up, my left ear was still buzzing and it went on for days so I went to the doctor.

Problem she wasn't too convinced it was trauma related, she examined my ears and said they were blocked up and she gave me a nasal steroid spray called fluticasone furoate to clear up the blockage. It hasn't done anything yet unfortunately but it's better than nothing I guess.

Hi @orbiter12 Tinnitus can fluctuate especially in early onset. Whilst it's good to be optimistic try to take each day as it comes as things can change hopefully not. You are in a good place at the moment and try to keep it that way. That means, not listening to music through headphones ever again even at low volume. When going to a club use noise reducing earplugs and keep away from loud sounds. Try to stop listening to the tinnitus by plugging up your ears although I know it's tempting. Let things take their course as time is a great healer. Use sound enrichment during the day and especially at night.
Hope things continue to go well for you.
All the best
Michael

Are there any supplements I can take to increase the chances of recovery? I've heard of prednisone NAC magnesium and vit C. Is it too late for these?

Predisone is not a supplement you have to ask your doctor, it's a powerful cortisone. But no miracle drug.
Get some magnesium and NAC, they can't hurt as far as I know.

The only supplements I'd recommend is Gingko biloba in tincture form (liquid) and magnesium. It is said magnesium can help repair nerve damage and I'm a believer in that.

I'm 20 yo, I had tinnitus for a week after a night out few years ago. I didn't learn the lesson - after a few months I completely forgot about tinnitus, started going out again with no hearing protection and after a just a few club visits during those 3-4 years acquired tinnitus again.

My advice would be: avoid clubs, earplugs or not. These places are extremely loud and not worth the risk.

Your ears have been damaged and IMHO you're at greater risk of acuring tinnitus again, if it goes away.

Go out, but be considerate about your hearing. Take care buddy.

I completely Agree. Although they're fun and a lot of my friends will be going, I think I will avoid them from now on. Not worth the constant ringing. The first 3-4 days were hell for me and just from them few days it is enough to out me off ever going to a club again. I'm In a good place ATM. Hopefully it goes away but if it doesn't it's not that bad to the point it will effect or control
My life. Time to be smart and not let the situation get any worse

Try keeping that noise low and avoid LOUD places. Tinnitus sucks, but i rather have a low, not noticeable hiss/noise than, the super loud generators i have in both ears. Don't take this for granted, it can and will get louder if you abuse your ears.

Its likely, though no one can give you a guarantee. Try silent treatment for month or two. No headphones. Listen to music from speakers, but make sure it doesn't go beyond 85dB. Let us know how it progresses.

Wish I did this from the early onset, I went to a party a week later (mainly with earplugs) but still. Didn't think too much of it at first. Only after that I started protecting hardcore.
Three months later now, and I am still doing the silent threatment. I sometimes go to loud places for work, but try to limit it and even started driving with earplugs. Should have done all of this earlier...
Best of luck Op.

If you dont hear it unless you plug your ears, I strongly suggest you stop plugging your ears with the intent to see if it's there.

You're effectively cured. Go on and live your life the way you should have been. If its loud - wear earplugs. If its not, don't.

Places loud enough to warrant earplugs are - the train (most people dont wear plugs, but if you look at the drivers - they almost always do), loud bars, concerts, fireworks shows, etc. You know when it's loud. Don't ignore it like you used to.

Do not become a hermit.

The Israeli military also did a study with magnesium a while ago (I'll see if I can find it and post it), and they found that magnesium also had oto-protective properties. People who took magnesium before loud noise exposure had less damage to their hearing than those that took no magnesium.

NAC as well in the US Army.

@fishbone apart from avoiding clubs and concerts what else should i be avoiding? People have recommended wearing plugs when driving, walking through the streets and on the train as well as in the gym. Hopefully not too late to start the silent treatment

IDK, but wearing plugs 24/7 seems like bit of an overkill.

If you receive any medication, better check for side-effects. If you see tinnitus, you'd be surprised how many have it, better to consult with your physician if that particular medication is necessary and if there isn't different one where T is not a side-effect.

Overprotecting your ears can open a new (painful) can of worms. I suspect that those who suggested to plug your ears while walking down the street are suffering from H.
