Is It My TMJ?

Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown. Maybe TMJ and/or myofascial pain.
For those of you with TMJ related Tinnitus:

I've been trying to figure out the cause of my tinnitus. This morning I noticed something if I open my mouth, lightly put a finger in both ears and slowly close my mouth again. My left ear is fine, however in my right ear (where I have the tinnitus) when my mouth is about 75% closed my ear canal makes a 'thunk' sound. What do you think? Not normal?

Doctors confirmed I have TMJ via a MRI of the joint; however, they still can't confirm if the T is from the TMJ or not. A doctor isn't able to determine to diagnose the cause of T.

Your dentist or a Maxillofacial specialist can confirm TMJ but tinnitus is caused through lots of things so even if you have TMJ your tinnitus can be caused through it but also have another cause too.
A mouth guard to wear at night and a soft food diet can help and over a few months you might see progress with the treatment.....lots of love glynis

@Bryanw511

Hi there! I have the exact same thing, my T is on the left ear and though I do not have any pronounced pain in my jaws but the left side of my face is slightly puffed up all the time....also when I open my mouth and close it, almost 75% down it makes a dull thud kind of noise....

I am not sure what this is but do believe my T is related to this thing....I am going to the dentist day after tom to do some imaging, will keep posted...

Thanks, Mita

Btw - My T started middle of April 2016 as well... :(

Hey Kim,

Somebody told me if T if from TMJ then its not continuous tone ...is this true ? Any ideas ? Thanks, Mita

@Paromita Hello Mita - I don't know for certain that is true or not true. I did met some other individuals in my doctors office that also have T that is constant. The doctor doesn't seem comfortable to state if it is from TMJ or not. I hope I catch up with someone one day that can confirm that had relief from a constant tone. Mine was constant, but I am getting some tone changes at times recently. I am not sure what is causing it. I've been trying everything and everything, but prior my tone didn't change at all and now it is...

That's great news Kim, I have two more people on this forum who had T from TMJ and have asked them as well...
Isbella did not reply back to you, did she, it would be nice if we could talk to her...:(

Thanks for your reply....Mita

@Paromita I don't know if it is great news or even good news. I am kind of scared with the changing tone. I don't know if it is getting worse, or if it is a sign it could be trying to get better. I guess only time will tell, but it would be nice to know if what I am doing is right or wrong???

No @Isabella 123 never replied, so if you are out there Isabella you have 2 ladies hoping to hear from you PLEASE!!!

I recently went to a neck and face pain specialist. I've had TMJ since I was like 8 years old. He prescribed me some cyclobenzaprine, and some mindfullness exercises to keep my jaw loose all day long. I hate being optimistic about anything regarding my T, because so much seems anecdotal. However, I've never had more success with any treatment thus far in my T. I still maintain a gluten free diet, which has helped and I think that's related to inflammation. But taking the Flexeril before bed, getting lots of sleep, and keeping my jaw loose has done absolute wonders for my T. I'm writing this now with the quietest ring I've had since July of last year. Again, I don't want to be too optimistic, but my god I feel incredible right now.

I think my T is from TMD (dentist has said to me). I started treatment from last week. I don't know this treatment has any impact on my T or no. but I've tried it. I must wait and I'll see.

Would you mind describing how you keep your jaw loose? I'm a habitual clencher and feel my jaw tightness.

It's mostly mindfulness exercises. Being aware of your jaw, always trying to keep it loose. I never let my teeth touch if I can avoid it. The doctor suggested an app on your phone, that will remind you at set or random intervals. He has some Android app but I have an iPhone, so I mostly just keep it in check by being mindful of it all the time. The cyclobenzaprine I take at night to prevent any clenching while I sleep.

Hi everyone.

I would love to learn that my tinnitus is caused by my TMJ. It would seem more treatable.

I had a low volume tinnitus for years. It wasn't bothersome at all but I would still take precautions like wearing ear plugs at concerts.

About a month ago though, the volume increased to a level that's much more noticeable. Not sure if it was a coincidence or not that right before the volume increased, I yawned at work and heard a very loud CRACK in my jaw. Now I'm wearing my mouth guard every night with the hopes that will help with the tinnitus and accompanying hyperacusis.

However, I did have an audiology test done last week, and they did find some hearing challenges at the higher end of the frequency spectrum. Most likely the same frequency as my tinnitus. Now, have I had that condition for years/forever? I don't know. I have tended towards listening to music in my car at a high volume though, which I am very much regretting today.

Thoughts?
