Tinnitus Since

Cause of Tinnitus

Hi been thinking about posting for a while - here goes.

My tinnitus started in the first week of January 2018. I woke up one morning said what is this - ok- must be a virus. A week later -ok- maybe a tumor. So 3 ENT doctors and 2 audiologists later I give up hope - its just tinnitus.

It would vary in tone and intensity from day to day sometimes hour to hour. In late March 2018 it started to dissipate and by May it was completely gone except for hearing my heartbeat in my right ear. I thought ok I can live with this. I stopped going on here, and then......about 6 weeks ago it comes back overnight worse than before.

I was keeping a log of the intensity the first time and using a scale of what was then 1 through 10 I am now a 12-13. This time is is steady and does not go up and down in volume.

Most of the time it sounds like I am standing next to a jet ready to take off and some times a loud tone. Also what I can hear over the noise is often distorted so I don't want to hear anything, music, tv, etc. So I sit home alone and listen to the jet engine.

I am very depressed, I am a 67 year old male and I live alone with my dog. I almost started a fire 2 weeks ago because I did not hear a timer I set after I put something on the stove. I am very distracted, forgetting things and for the most part don't give a s#@% about anything any more.

If a doctor told me I can make you completely deaf so you won't hear ANY noise I would say set my appointment up ...........

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear about your tinnitus.

Can relate ...

Do you have any idea what has caused it?

Have you had an audiogram done?

Deb, no I cannot relate it to anything either time. Yes I had an audiogram.

I have been on Triamterene -hydro for 3 weeks--thinking of stopping it it is not doing anything except causing dizziness and urination.

I called last week on the Levo system, audiologist at the nearest place that offers it says I have to have it steady for at least 6 months to be considered. Great.

Tinnitus is a neurological response to a loss of hearing, if you lose more hearing tinnitus will only get worse. ENT's are useless at dealing with tinnitus.

You may have an unrelated vascular condition called "Pusatile tinnitus" if you hear your own heartbeat.

If you can hang in there it may be great in 2 years or so a device from the University of Michigan may help with tinnitus.
