Just finished my lesson and my student brought something up that I wasn't aware of. He said he was lucky to see The Damned with the original bass player, Paul Gray, as he hasn't played with them for 30 years. When I asked why, he said he quit because of tinnitus, but has returned to do the latest tour with them (this year). So, we had a bit of a discussion about tinnitus, as he already knows I have it, and warned him that nobody ever listens until it's too late. That's one of the only examples I can think of though where a band member - who was already famous - quit music because of tinnitus. The only others I can think of are Phil Collins and recently Brian Johnson of AC/DC, but they usually do a tour here and there.
Anyway, I did a quick check on Wikipedia to see if there was anything there regarding Paul Gray, and straight away I saw this:
Gray was involved with Community Music Wales for a number of years[when?], a charity aimed at helping young bands based in Cardiff, until severe tinnitus and hyperacusis interrupted his musical activities.[citation needed] In 2005 he took up the post of Regional Officer, Wales & Southwest England for the British Musicians' Union.[citation needed]
