I'm really keen to hear from any piano players here who had to stop at the onset of tinnitus or hyperacusis, and were able to return to playing again after a period of recovery.

If you returned to it, were you able to play anything you wanted, or just quiet pieces? Do you still rely on ear plugs for protection from a recurrence?

As someone who had only just got my love back for playing the instrument again, a few weeks before struck by tinnitus and hyperacusis, this has been one of most difficult aspects of my situation for me.

Thanks in advance!

Let's open this thread up to other musicians as well as piano players.

I've seen posts from a couple of drummers who have been able to still play, probably electronic drums I think. And singers too. We all love what we do, and we'll all have had challenges to face as a result of our afflictions.

In my first years of tinnitus I listened to a lot of music. I have a good hi-fi set with a Sonus Faber Grand Piano speakers and one thing I noticed by that time was when I was not in a good day the sound of piano's high notes messed with a light hyperacusis I had in those days.

I like a solo CD from Chucho Valdes Live in New York where the piano is amazingly recorded. When he hit the higher notes my ear felt strange.

In those days I was not very aware of what hyperacusis was. Unfortunately today I know better, God I really know. Nowadays my hyperacusis is so bad I had to give up listening to music on a hi-fi set or I have to listen at a moderate sound level.
