I came down with some form of flu—possibly COVID-19, though I'm not sure.

On Day 5, I lost my sense of smell, which was replaced by a phantom smell (not surprising).

What are my chances of regaining it? Are the chances approximately the same, whether it's COVID or the flu?

Hi, fellow Torontonian!

I remember losing my sense of taste and smell after having Covid. It took a few weeks, but it eventually came back. I also lost it about five days into my illness. From what I understand, most people recover, so try not to worry too much about it.

There are cases where it takes much longer to return. However, even in those situations, there seem to be therapies available that can help you regain your sense of smell.

Stay positive!

My wife lost her sense of smell for several months after a COVID-19 infection, but it eventually returned. I'd encourage you not to get discouraged if it takes some time.

One thing that helped her was olfactory retraining. The Mayo Clinic has a helpful article about it here:

Olfactory retraining after COVID-19
