Cause of Tinnitus
Noise
Hey guys,

I just recovered from a 4 week spike.

When I was driving in my car this morning with the windows closed and another car wanted to pass me but drove too close and hit my outside mirror, the resulting bang seemed very loud in the small enclosed space and now my tinnitus has spiked again and is much louder.

Anyone experienced this before? It sounded like a damn gunshot to me, will this have caused any damage? Should I take medrol or anything like that?

It is unlikely to have caused any permanent damage. I wouldn't worry about it.
My guess is your spike is driven by your anxiety.

Maybe I need to clarify that it wasnt just a tud when you hit it lightly but a really loud bang that shattered the actual mirror , ah what the hell, it probably sounded louder than it really was , but still not a very pleasant experience.

@Bart,
I think you will be fine after the sock of a loud sound and car damage .
You could try steroids but they also come with problems and insomnia so I would think your self lucky it was just your mirror and not a car smash....!
A nice relaxing evening and a beer might settle that spike down for you.
love glynis

This is the reason I wear my Peltor muffs whenever I drive...

If I were you, I would go to the ER and ask for a course of Prednisone. They might give you a five day supply. You could go to a different doctor/ER on the same day, and ask for more prednisone.

Maybe I will take a short 5 or 6 day Medrol course just to be sure, these have always helped in the past.

@Bill Bauer , I think I have a 20 day supply of Medrol allready, prescription for Medrol are standard practice here for tinnitus , only had to use it a couple of times though , the side effects on the 64mg dose are total shit.

Aren't you afraid that while potential accident hitting something with muffs could make even louder noise? In my peltor optime 3 even when i gently tap on side i can hear loud bang, one time when i was working in garage with muffs on i had hit the wall with them and that was so loud i was afraid of getting spike.

More things for me to worry about...

The worst part is that I am not sure how to even begin to figure out whether the expected noise reduction is worth the expected risk due to what you described above...

I used to use that protection when I worked in the laboratory, in addition to my personal plugs (which protect a little more in terms of decibels)
As I said in another thread sometimes people do not consider the ratio square meters / decibels. In my case I'm almost sure that despite using double protection (I was protecting myself from 35 db at least) the fact of having been in such a small place generated unhealthy conditions (besides that the acoustic material was old and did not absorb correctly the sound waves). The sound not only passes through our ears, it travels throughout our body, it is reflected by the cavities of your mouth, of your nose, through the skin. If i was aware that any random noise can harm me I could never live a single day of peace

What I'm trying to say is that you have to take care of yourself to a rational level. overprotection in any case generates anxiety and may be the trigger for a temporary worsening of your condition

these are the old peltor, very noisy when banged on indeed, had those before

the new series X is much better in this regard especially the large x5a
