Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for Tinnitus — Long-Lasting Everyday Home-Practiced Experiences

Do you remember how long the initial spike lasted for? One to two weeks? I am now wary of doing more, as so far it has set me back six months, and I cannot sleep properly again. I use the TinniTool 620nm 100mW. Now I feel like I have my back up against the same wall. It is very loud.

Also, my initial noise-induced trauma happened 28 years ago, and I had habituated until I had another noise event six months ago. Do you think it is too late for me to even be using the laser?

Hard to say because it has been so many years. At the time, I had six or so different tones going full blast. It felt like every moment was a spike — a spike like a sharp object going through my brain.

I was on a relatively strong sleep medication and attributed my difficulty sleeping or not being able to sleep at all some nights, mostly to the hot weather. That time period coincided with the start of summer, but it was probably both factors and actually, maybe mainly the additional tinnitus loudness. I am not at all sure. It might have taken about a month until I started getting better.

Sleep is rough because good sleep is so necessary for recovery. I used to say that the earlier, the better, and three months maximum are required for a good recovery with the laser, but I am not sure anymore. I am seven years in now and still think there are good reasons for me to continue using the laser.

It could be that you need to start early to begin the healing process, which can then continue over time. Or it could be that it does not matter as much when you start. I only really have myself to go by.

My tinnitus is not improving much, if at all, but my ability to tolerate sounds has gone up significantly, even in the past two years. Perhaps it is just me being careful, and it has nothing to do with the laser anymore, but it does seem to me that the laser is helping in this regard.

Your durations so far have been very short. I do not remember exactly, but I think I was doing 30 minutes a day with two days off per week pretty soon after starting (the Konftec protocol, which I began with at first). Within about a week, perhaps, I ramped it up pretty quickly.

I don't know what else to say. It is a little strange to me that people are having these extreme reactions to such low doses of light. It is up to you to decide whether to continue.
