Hi,

I am trying to taper off Mirtazapine and after about 48 hours of taking my last dose I get a high pitched noise in left ear.

Been on Mirtazapine for about 2 months and it is not doing much for me so doctor is helping me off.

Has anyone else had this and how long did it last for?

I have tried to taper from but didn't seem to make much difference.

Many thanks for your help

How are you tapering? As you know Mirtazapine has a stronger antihistamine effect as you lower the dose. Most people just "jump off" this drug at the dose they were taking because of that.

I have been on 15mg for about 4 months and cut that from 30mg which I was on for 2 months before. I haven't noticed any adverse effects on my tinnitus.
I cut to 7.5mg about 3 weeks ago and all still good.
It does help my sleep though I think I will be ok without it now.

Hi,

I was only on 15mg after reading the message boards I went down to 7.5 for a couple of weeks then 3.75mg for about a week. Very hard after that to cut it down even more. The doctors now advised to have 15mg every other night which I doubt will make a difference.

What are you noticing that is making it hard? And, are you taking it for sleep or as an antidepressant?

After I stopped it after a couple of days I got Tinnitus noises at back of head and left ear that went on for several days.
Which put my anxiety back up. Doctor advised to go back on it and guess what the noises went away. Which is not much help as I trying to get off it.

I was taking it for sleep and anxiety. I am sleeping better even with tablets and anxiety is down. I had a very mild bit of tinnitus before starting Mirt. BUT was no way near this volume.

thanks for your help

Yeah. It does help with sleep sometimes.

I had no problems going from 15mg to 3/4 15mg tablet , 1/2 tablet, 1/4 tablet it was when I stopped i had noises at back of head for 3 days. So this time according to doctor 15mg every other night for 10 days. I am going to try that. I suspect I am going to get same results.

When anxiety is part of the picture it's difficult to know if the T is due to coming off the medication or due to the increase in anxiety. I took it for years and it seemed to help with sleep, anxiety and tinnitus to some degree. Coming off it did create a rebound for all of those things for a while. But, in my opinion, Mirtazapene is not a clean drug for the brain and long term use could likely make everything worse.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that as well that maybe anxiety came back as well causing it. BUT my tinnitus was nothing like this before I started Mirt. The first 2/3 days after stopping didn't have any anxiety. Then the noise started at back of head/ears a high pitched noise. I posted on another forum and ringing ears etc is a common withdrawal symptom after Antidepressant withdrawal. Dr Joseph Glenmullen listed as no 51 out 58 Withdrawal Symptoms. It was strange as soon as I restarted the medication it went away. So it looks like I have to suffer it for a while if I want to get off Mirt.

If you are having trouble stopping Mirt, you might talk to your doctor about orally dissolvable tablets. (It appears that it is available in ODTs.) You can then do water titration where you can make very fine cuts in dosage. It can take awhile, but it is easier on the body than 50% cuts.
