Movie Theaters?!

I just saw Jurassic World... fun movie. You can go to the movies. Sometimes they are not really that loud. Sometimes they are. Bring ear plugs just in case and enjoy. I have tinnitus and hyperacusis and I can still go to movies. There was about a year where I didn't due to fear of loud movies, however, now that is not an issue for me. The fear of loud noise is far worse than the actual noise.

I never stopped going to the movies. I LOVE movies! I take my ear plugs (and ear muffs) and don't sit real, real close. But then, I never liked sitting close.

One thing we have talked about here at Tinnitus Talk: The trailers are crazy loud, much worse than the film. I just saw "Inside Out" on Saturday, and it was the case as usual. So if you're worried, stake out your seat but stand outside the door for the trailers.

You should get some professional earplugs, the ones that filter sounds well.

I've seen Jurassic World with good but classic earplugs and I totally enjoyed it.

can you actually get ear/hearing damage from going to the movies?

No. There is an official limit to the loudness authorized in cinema.

After, if it's respected or not... the great majority respect it i think, maybe some not.

I personally prefer to let my ear rest so i take earplugs. So after my mind is cool and satisfied. And it's loud enough to enjoy it really.

I watched The Terminator without ear plugs and it didn't make my tinnitus worse. In fact if anything I had low tinnitus days the following few days.

But the reason for my tinnitus is unknown so if yours is due to hearing loss be sensible to not exacerbate the situation.

I do not go to clubs anymore though, no way - that definitely causes some kind of accumulative damage which will eventually catch up to you.

I saw the documentary about Amy Winehouse called Amy last Friday (fantastic!) and watched the whole thing without earplugs or any increased tinnitus from it. I measured the sound decibels with my phone and they were in the 60-70 range so I felt comfortable doing that. I tried Jurassic World without plugs but put them in after about a half hour. Tonight my wife and I are going to go see Trainwreck (can't wait! Love Amy Schumer so much.) and will probably try without plugs but stick 'em in if it is too loud.

So yes I go to movies!

I've been to several movies recently (just saw "Bridge of Spies", which is a really good movie), and haven't had any problems or increases in tinnitus at all. I bring my ear plugs with me, and put them in before the trailers. Usually, after the trailers are over, I can take them out again and enjoy the movie. Those trailers are waaay too loud!

Don't count on that to keep you safe.
http://kxan.com/2014/02/14/testing-movie-theater-volume-too-loud/
"Certain types of high-spectacle movies, such as Transformers, have decibel levels of 90 for almost the entire movie and have decibel levels of 120 for significant periods and at some points get to 130 decibels. Now 130 decibels is a jet engine at about 10 meters," says Dr. Bedolla.

Sustained levels of >120db, as in, three times the volume pressure that my motorcycle makes a full rev? That's completely bonkers.

I went see James Bond Spector and had my noise reduction plugs in and went on fine........lots of love glynis

I get more and more afraid of sound it seems.

I don't dare go to concerts anymore, too afraid. I never used to go to many concerts, maybe one concert once every 1-2 years, so even though I am sad i can't go to concerts, the change in my life is not that big.

Now what I DO miss, is going to the movies. I am a huge movie buff and used to go to the movies once every month on average. I am still very tempted to go to the movies, but also too afraid....it is a huge battle within me if I should go or not...

I don't go to the movies anymore. Even if it's a safe level with earplugs in, the tinnitus would be distracting and worrying about my ears would take away from the experience.

There are some screenings for people with sensory sensitivity where they are not as loud and they don't turn down the lights all the way. They do this for people with autism. The only thing is it's only kid's movies from what I've seen. : /

They also have that at my local movie theather, BUT it is for women with babies (who are on maternity leave) . I don't really feel like watching a movie in the presence of a bunch of babies who may be potentially loud or obnoxious :/

Wish they had screenings for people with tinnitus.

I used to go to the movies when I first caught T and for each movie I went to I didn't have any issues at all.

Last film I saw was the Hateful 8 (guns and explosions) and I wore earplugs at all times - came out totally fine!

Then I caught H and have been resisting going ever since, but it's encouraging to read all these replies...

I'm planning to test the waters soon and so am just as curious about the cinema as the guy who wrote this thread!

I will go to movies tomorrow.

I've had tinnitus for almost 3 months.

I am bit afraid but I've been exposed to loud noises during this time and my condition has still been improving.

I will take earplugs with me just in case.

I'll let you know how it went...

What movie will you be seeing? The last time I went to the movies was 11 years ago. I saw Casino Royale and it was load. You would suspect they are just as loud if not louder today.

A drive in movie would be great, you get to control the sound on your car radio, yourself.

With these multiplexes, they should create one theater, in the group, which isn't dangerously loud, the way it used to be years ago before the advent of THX. If they have a few movies playing, they could schedule lower volume showings for those with hearing problems such as tinnitus, hyperacusis, etc., and/or those with sensitivities who simply do not enjoy deafening volumes. I think it would work.

Wow, good luck bro. You're certainly braver than I am.

@John Meyers If OHSA says at 85 dB to start protecting hearing you can rest assured it is lower than 85 dB. Remember a couple of days after 9/11/2001 EPA said New York ground zero air was safe to breathe. How many have died from cancer?

I'm going to see aladdin with my GF. I don't go movies that often. Last movie was week before I got T, so about 3 months ago. I was so happy then...

No, no. Can't think that way. I get depressed again.

So I went to movies today to see Aladdin.

I lasted 2 hours without any earplugs :) I admit the movie was bit loud at times, but I survived it!

Now I am back at silence and my tinnitus and hyperacusis seems to be unaffected.

I felt bit uneasy at times, but far, no damage done.

And someone messed with the theater lights, so we got free tickets after the movie.

But tomorrow when I wake up I will know how things really are...

Loud tinnitus is like having a constant life-long reminder to not do dumb stuff. Most of us don't need a reminder like that. Turns out that some people could really benefit from such a reminder.

Well, went to movies and nothing happened to my ears.
See, events like that will likely encourage you to do more of this insane behaviour. [Avoiding movie theaters has some (shockingly low compared to the high value of silence and high cost of a lifetime of loud tinnitus) cost, but wearing earplugs has NO cost. You had everything to gain (reduce your chance of loud tinnitus) and nothing to lose, and you still chose to not wear earplugs.] You Need a constant life-long reminder/motivator to stop doing dumb stuff, and Eventually you just might get one.
