MSM for Treating Tinnitus — Share Your Experience

Hi all,

I haven't seen many reports of people using MSM for tinnitus/pain on here.

After a friend recommended I try it, I have started taking 1000 mg/day. I don't think it has helped me yet, but I am thinking of increasing my dose.

Found quite a few anecdotal reports on social media of people experiencing dramatic improvements with MSM.

Anyone else tried it?

I have been taking 2000 mg a day for one week, so far no significant effect.

I tried this many years ago, and took it regularly for years. Haven't tried it again since getting tinnitus however. What I recall from all those years ago is that MSM can greatly increase cell wall permeability. When I first tried it, I became quite nauseous for several hours.

Apparently when you increase cell permeability, various toxins that may be trapped inside the cell are able to move into the bloodstream. If too much is released at a time, the body can become toxic until it's able to be eliminated. I can see where improved cell wall permeability could be a factor in severity of tinnitus.

My understanding is that the sulfur in MSN (Methylsulfonylmethane) is what creates most of the positive effects from supplementing with it. Some people get the same sulfur injection by supplementing with DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), which appears to have the potential for improving tinnitus as well. -- Dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO] therapy in subjective tinnitus of unknown origin.

Hi Lane,

Thank you again for another great and informative post.

I hope you are keeping well?

I did try the MSM around 2000 mg/day for a short while. I don't believe it had any effect on the severity of my tinnitus, so discontinued it.

I started taking MSM, 3 grams in the A.M. and 3 grams before bed, this weekend. My tinnitus has been loud since COVID-19 a week ago, unfortunately no improvement in the (hopefully spike) I am experiencing now. I can report that the hip pain and restless leg that contributes to my insomnia has completely disappeared! So if nothing else that has been a great relief. I also have gout and they say that MSM is good to supplement with for that affliction as well.

For clarity's sake my daily supplements are as follows:

6 grams MSM divided morning/evening
4 or 6 grams Taurine divided morning/evening
2 grams time released Vitamin C divided morning/evening
20,000 IU Vitamin D
15 mg Zinc
Copper
Tongkat Ali nootropic 10% 5 day on, 2 day off cycle

When I can't sleep:

1 gram GABA
250 mg L-Theanine
5-HTP
Sometimes all 3 at once with extra Taurine to try and knock myself out

I stopped taking Melatonin because it contributes to restless leg.
