Cause of Tinnitus
Noise induced - nightclub
Hi all,

Have been suffering quite a lot in the past 3-4 weeks: my noise-induced T has become considerably louder. I had a couple of very loud, but brief, noise exposures at bars which seemed to have set this worse T off, and the 33Db ear plugs I was wearing both times didn't seem to help.

I've since been extremely cautious with listening to any music - now even quiet music played from my laptop seems to cause a small spike.

My T has two tones, one is the beep and the other is a hiss. They both fluctuate in intensity but are always present. Anyway, last night in bed, the hiss sound disappeared completely for almost one minute. Safe to say I was so shocked I literally leapt out of bed and covered my ears to check I wasn't imagining things. I could still hear the beep tone (which isn't nearly as annoying), but the hissing was completely gone. Unfortunately, after that minute, the hiss reappeared and within 10 seconds was at its normal level again.

Has anyone else experienced something so sudden or similar, and does this mean that my ears might be getting a little better? Would appreciate any help.

maybe the way you were laying gave you better circulation, i see you were noise induced but possibly the way you had your neck or body positioned helped you?

The ear plugs helped big time. Also the ear plugs likely have a NRR rating of 33. They DO NOT reduce dB rating by 33. They likely reduce dB by 13. (33-7)/2.

I don't even understand why you'd put yourself in a situation where you'd be exposed to loud noises? You do realize T can go up much louder if you continue to damage your hearing?

Permanent T is when it lasts longer than 6 months so there's a small chance your T might be temporary unless you continue to damage your hearing so it becomes permanent. If it does go away consider yourself lucky and never expose yourself to very high dB or it'll likely come back permanently.

Tinnitus is a cruel mistress, occasionally I find when I am in silence tinnitus calms way down sometimes to the point that it's gone. It always comes back though, for me it's worse when other sounds are present even if they are quiet. Tinnitus just rides over the top of other sounds. But in silence it can almost go away.

Yes it's very cruel! The reactive nature definitely throws me - in quieter environments I'll think it's got better as the volume decreases, but then I expose myself to moderate, everyday sound levels, and it comes right back.
