Cause of Tinnitus
Loud music
Hi all I'm James. And I'm 25.

New here just need some help atm am really struggling that's why I signed up.

So I've had tinnitus for 10 years since I was 16 - form listening to loud music and going concerts. Which I really regret and hate myself for doing so.
I never really heard the tinnitus for the past 8 years outta the 10 it was veryyyy low.

However jan 2017 I had microsuction which increased my T - and I heard it over there tv, music and such however I didn't hear it when I was outside or anywhere but home - so was still all good.

NOW HERE'S THE BAD PART!

I recently went to the dentist about 10 days ago now to replace a filling and my god my tinnitus has increased dramatically!!!! I mean it is SO LOUD - not just has the frequency gone higher ( which was already high pitched) but the volume has INCREASED - I didn't think it was humanly possible that it could be this high. I feel like I shouldn't be able to hear anything or anyone over this volume

I didn't think this would ever happen and I'm really scared , no one in my family understands anything, they just don't get what's going on. So I am really alone with this.

Also, I don't know if I have any hearing loss or not I just can't tell.
I don't know what to do should I go gp tomorrow? What can they do?

I've been talking the following supplements : Nac, Ginko, b12,b6, vit c, vit d, turmeric .. you name it I've taken it.

I'm literally shaking as I write this, I can't believe this has happened - for the past 8 years I never complained once about the the T and just got on with life , I literally feel like my life's over. And feel so trapped inside my head and there's no escape from the noise it's 100/100 volume wise

Is this a spike ? Will it go away back to how it was 10 day ago? I'm so scared it won't

Thanks for listening , sorry for the long post

James

James which tooth did you have work done on?

Sometimes the nerves connected to our jaw are agitated. And with time they will calm down.

Personally I found taking so many supplements will also trigger a high pitched sound.

James, my T is pulsatile, and not as bad as you're dealing with. I will keep a good thought going for you. I suspect I know the answer here, but are you able to rest? Can you sleep at all? Your gp can help with this.

Hi starthrower,

It was my 2nd premolars at the top left of my mouth, the same side as my louder T than the other ear at that time.

Yes I am praying that it will go back to how it was.

I might stop talking some of the supplements as they don't seem to be helping.

Hi

Sleeping is quite difficult for me at the moment as all I can think about is how loud the volume is.
I might have to go to the GP tomorrow to see what can be done.

Do you think I should try and get prednisone ? I've never had it before in all of my 10 years of T?

Thanks

Well, I had two runs of prednisone with my ENT, and two others with my GP. My ENT used the high dose with a taper. I did a week at 60mg, then tapered down. This did help my T, but it jacked me up in other ways. My sleep cycle was crushed (had to use ambien to sleep), my mood was terrible, my already huge face puffed up, and other bad side effects. But, it did help the T. I also tried drops with steroid in them. I found them pretty worthless, leaving me sloshy and crazy feeling, but I have tubes in, so that was part of it.

I bet your GP would be interested in your stress, sleeplessness, and all of it, and could help you. My experience is that the specialists care about their deal, but not the basics, like sleeping and stress...that's just my experience.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry about the spike. Did the dentist use drill for the fillings and if so did you wear any ear protection? If it is due to acoustic trauma from the drill noise, it may take the ears some time to settle. Perhaps try masking your T if is is really stressful. Is it high pitch? If so, you can use nature sounds such as heavy rain, cicadas, waves, wind, even shower or faucet sound. Take good care. God bless.

Most likely it will fade and get quieter. But it could take anywhere from 2 months to 2 years before this gradual process ends.

@jamesmill101 I got T years ago from ear syringing where I adjusted. Then after dental work I got a dramatic increase in volume with a very high pitch.

I know this is hard, but you should get some pink music, rain, waterfall or a running brook. You can get this online. You can also buy a CD or a device. Play it away from you by 8 to 10 feet as much as you can during the day and night. Start playing it above the whisper level, but not at a high volume. You want to focus on the pink music. All this is a brain thing.

I should had done this myself. I did on first onset from syringing, but I lacked doing this after my dental incident. I know that pink music has been discussed a thousands times here, but researchers now believe more than ever that those with loud tinnitus need to distract the brain at an early stage. Maybe consider asking your doctor for something to help you sleep as sleep is important. Prednisone may help if there's hearing loss, but read up on that first. Please stay in connect with us.

Hi James, I am sorry about this happening to you and do understand exactly. My advice is to get your xrays, demand a list of every single chemical they put in your mouth and go to a lawyer right away. There are too many of us suffering from tinnitus after dental work.

Hi
Yes the Dentist did do drilling for 10 Mins and I asked her to do around 8-10 seconds drill 10 seconds stop which she did

I did wear ear plugs

THe tinnitus will not mask by anything apart from running water - it is the highest pitch it's ever been

Hi

Thing is my anxiety it's at its peak- and I honestly cannot tell if I have any hearing loss. The tinnitus is so loud that it feels like I can't hear suff when I can. I did notice though that he tv sounds lower and my ears do feel dull - and like there's pressure in them.

I am really scared that j do have hearing loss atm

I have a GP appointment booked today- don't know what they can do though

You say you got a dramatic increase in tinnitus after dental work, did this go back down to baseline or not?
If it did how long did take?

Thanks

Does prednisolone side effects go away or are they permentant? Like the round face one? That scares me !!!

Perhaps if you are bored by hearing the same masking sound of running water, you can give other masking sounds a try as there are many high pitch sounds to choose from. Some members find relief from sounds of heavy rain, cicadas, even shower and squeaky faucet (as in my case during the early days). I listed some of these masking options and the sites to find them in my success story in the detail strategies section under 'Masking'. The last one there (a youtube audio/video) is one many members find relief from their really high pitch T. It seems to be a really high pitch cicadas sound plus some ACRN tones. It is called the 'Most powerful tinnitus sound therapy' which has many positive comments on youtube. I remember one member posted that his high pitched T can't be masked by anything until he tried that one I recommended to him. Here is my success story. Check it out. I also list the youtube audio/video 'Most powerful tinnitus relief' below. If you want to try it, make sure you turn the volume low first and slowly adjust up to the level you feel comfortable. Try to use PC speakers and hear it from a distance for this and not ear phones.

Hi James,

Prednisone is usually prescribed when one is exposed to extreme noises/explosions. I don't think this is what you need. One side effect can be extreme heightened anxiety levels. I think you need something short term to help with the anxiety level so you will be able to sleep. Once the anxiety is addressed it is easier to find what is really going on.

Have you been to the doctor yet?

Hi

Yes I have been to the doctor and she said she's never heard of even giving out steroids for hearing ?!
And suggested I get a hearing test as I'm concerned about my hearing and start CBT.

However, as I was worried about my hearing so I did an online frequency test and can hear uo to 12,000HZ in both ears
So I'm assuming that my hearing isn't affected by the drilling of the Dentist? As I could only hear up to 12 prior to the dentist as I tested before

Thanks !

I think your doctor gave you good advice. I also think you did not have hearing loss because of the drilling but your tinnitus was affected by the bone conduction vibrations. For me it would take about a week to calm down the loudness.

I think usually the prednizone will be prescribed by ENTs. I took the info to my regular doctor.

Just a quick reply tonight. You are doing great taking all the steps.

Hi

I had a hearing test today and it shows no hearing loss - thank god.

Do you think it's worth me trying to get prednisone ?

Thanks

My personal opinion is no. I think the side effect of increased anxiety and jitters would not help you. Plus it really should only be used after extreme noise exposure in the first few days. A lot of people think taking this prescription is the answer. Best to do what you have done and research the idea and ask questions.

How are you doing now?

Yes I was thinking the same

I'm doing better, mentally, however it's still as loud as ever, and this is the 13th day - so still in hope it's just a spike.

On a different note, when I press my head behind my left ear one of the tinnitus sounds (as I have many) gets lower in volume/vanishes. Also if I press another part of my head, on top of both ears, the whole entire tinnitus gets louder. When I turn my head to the right side, my right ear gets louder.
Strange!

Hi all,

Just an update, my tinnitus is still extremely loud and this is the 17th day since the drilling occurred - I had my hearing test and it was normal.
And I'm experiencing sharp pains in both ears :/

This is really getting to me know, I'm hoping this will go down back to baseline.
