Cause of Tinnitus
Flu
Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to this T struggle as I've been going through this T issue for the past 6 weeks. I was doing pretty well a few weeks ago but it's starting to become too much for me. What started as a fairly mild ringing has gotten significantly worse in the last 5 days. It's varied constantly through these 6 weeks but it's at a point where it's overwhelming every sense of mine. To the point where I can't function during the day and can't find any way to get sleep. It's taking it's toll on my physically and I've been spiraling down fairly quickly. It's hard to even believe that I'm writing this but it's very difficult for me to see a life going forward if this progression stays.

7 or so weeks ago I got the flu and was under some stress, I had some pressure in my ear, became sensitive to high frequencies and then woke up one day with Tinnitus. At that time it was only in one ear, a few weeks later it progressed to my other ear and then got progressively worse. I went to another audiologist and had a high frequency test done. Seems I have about a 30 db drop between 13-15khz. That might have been the cause for my concern and progression to worsening T as everything else about me was great.

Currently I have a few tones, lower in my left ear, a 10khz hissing and an extreme 14khz squealing that is the one driving me to feel this way. I was given Xanax, which I refused to take initially but now it's really the only out that I have, unfortunately it seems every time it wears off the ringing is worse. I've taken it on and off for a few weeks, generally every four days or so as I would normally have a string of good days. However, I now find myself taking it almost every day, it's the only thing that takes away that squealing, pulsating, 14khz. It's such a terrible noise that it pierces everything, cannot be masked and is generally causing me to lose it.

I am looking for help, support, advice or anything that may get me through this.

Hello

I think the first you have to do is calm down and take your stress and anxiety under control. T is a very random thing. There is no rational behind this thing. It can go up and down whenever it wants or even go down on its own without any thing at all. I know in the beginning you can feel despair but just hold in there. Jus think about the days that you had it good. If it went up it will go down. The more you worry and concern yourself with it the worst it gets. I am honestly so bad myself. I sort of feel it's a bit of an OCD thing. I personally wouldn't take pills but that's me. You have to do what's best. But then again as you said it you're so new to T. My T was bad for the first 6 months then went down for a good 7 and then back up and in the other as well ever since summer 2016. It fluctuates so much. So don't let it get you down. It will get better and habituation will take over. Try reading success stories and keep positive thoughts. Good luck to you. Xoxo

Hi Chris,
When you have had a flu virus it can take weeks after for your ears to settle but a secondary infection could be lurking in your ears in the mucous ..
Have your ears checked to make sure they are ok.
Sudefed and steam inhalation can help clear your tubes.
You could ask your doctor about a low antidepresant called Nortryptaline .
At a low dose will help you sleep and can reduce tinnitus for some people...lots of love glynis
