New Brain Scanning Technology

Absolutely! Anything that will help them see the (potential) damage in our brain will be amazing. This way they will be able to better develop medicines. because now they will be able to better tell which areas they need to be targeting and how they function relating to tinnitus. You just made my Saturday. Thank you for that article.

It made our national TV news yesterday and was hailed as a breakthrough so every little helps...

This is good news. Hopefully they can see Tinnitus in the brain better and what other effects it has.

While the 7 tesla is great and an improvement over the 3 tesla, if I recall correctly they have also made and are testing the 9.4 tesla, 11.75 Tesla, 15 tesla, and 21 Tesla. That magnetic power could pick up a tank!

You can see the difference between the 1.5, 3, and 7 tesla.

It'll be nice when they can actually see this, non disease, heh. Then maybe it'll be taken a lot more seriously, cause as it is, I think most just assume we are delusional, faking it, or just wanting pity.

The highest known injury in the military is tinnitus. To make it worse, some have started claiming to have it in order to get an easy disability payment. This potentially hurts those who really need help.

I've seen pet scans "showing" Tinnitus. It was from the University of Arkansas. There's a lab there doing research on whether rTMS has a negligible effect on Tinnitus. It basically just shows the brain as gone haywire and overactive nearly everywhere.

You'd think it'd help as the military would be motivated to find a way to stop having to pay $135 each month to everyone that claims Tinnitus. However I've only ever seen the military researching drugs that would prevent Tinnitus in the first place and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.

Wish they'd just do some actual research.

Thanks for sharing!

I have actually read about this earlier this week but did not get the chance to post about it. In fact, I have done extensive research into different imaging technologies of the ear and the brain. This new scanner is a very important step forward as far as brain imaging technologies are concerned.

In fact, we now have a dozen of different brain imaging technologies that we can potentially use to find tinnitus biomarkers. But for the time being, MRI is still the preferred technology, and still will be in the coming years. It's a well established technology throughout the world, so it's very good that they are continuously improving this technology. It's also one of the most cost effective technologies out there.

I think this will expand research in ways unheard of.
I agree! But as far as tinnitus is concerned, we still need money to be put into tinnitus research specifically. Perhaps what it takes is a small team of researchers in some corner of the world to use the new scanner on tinnitus patients. If they unravel something unseen before, then other researchers will flock to see what this is about and start using the new tool more extensively. I am just speculating, but you never know if you never try, and you need money for all that.

That kind of magnetic power could potentially cure your tinnitus! (y)

I have had that exact thought some time ago. But is there any real evidence for this?

Oh how I would love to get my head scanned! But won't an MRI be too loud?

It would be relatively loud. Too loud for some, not much for others. What you can do, and what most of these hospitals that offer MRI scans do is to put ear muffs on before you start the scan. You could probably wear ear plugs under the ear muffs too.

But yeah, that's one big problem with MRI scanners - they are noisy. If they could at least make them quieter... There are other options that don'e make any noise, like MEG. But they have other limitations, and they are more expensive.

I know OHSU (they do a lot of tinnitus research) has a 12 tesla mri. Although i've not heard of any research utilizing these MRIs to find or measure tinnitus. I just wish some lab would be able to objectively find subjective tinnitus on scanning technology. Would make treating tinnitus a ton easier.
