Loud noise
Hi all

I'm an old hand at tinnitus. I have multiple loud unabating sounds to live with. Some have come along for the journey at a later stage . The most recent was a loud high pitched sound a few years ago. It remained and is always above all external noise. That really caused me trouble to habituate to. I was very ill because of it and didn't want to go on.

My latest addition is a new and horrible sound. It's a low pitch but loud bass throbbing sound. It's like there is someone playing bass music a few doors down ... except there isn't. It's in my ears. This sound is very hard to deal with because the mind keeps thinking it's an external noise like a rumbling bass or running truck in the background or something. It's continual but varies depending on other noises. I can also feel it's vibration.

Anyone else experience this kind of thing? I'm desperate to hear from someone who might be in circumstance so I can find ways I can deal with it!

Thanks.

First off, I hope this new sound fades away soon. I've always thought high pitched sounds were the worst but I've experienced a lower pitched sounds that was equally as disturbing.
What I find is that despite the variances, my tinnitus always returns to its baseline. Hopefully yours will as well. Sending positive thoughts your way.

I have a bass like sound in my ears, but mine is caused by a combination of 2 conditions.. patulous eustachian tubes and ear myoclonus.

My eustachian tubes are unable to close so I hear a rhythmic bass like thumping, caused by my own heartbeat. And my heartbeat seems to set off the ear muscle spasm... But the spasm is more like fluttering.

Mine is so loud when it first started I asked my mom if she knew where the bass sound was coming from, at first I thought it was my neighbors, but when the sound kept following me no matter where I was and no one else heard it, I knew it was my T.

Thanks for reply. Where are you in terms of habituating to the noise ? Is this a constant sound for you ? I think im going to find this one tricky to deal with.

@Brett_angel

Yep it's constant, but I'm trying to find treatment for it.

Not getting used to it at all, but probably because I'm hoping it will go away if my eustachian tubes can be treated...

Yes, I get it. I narrowed mine down to the tensor tympani as a result of acoustic shock disorder. Causes the trigeminal nerves in my face to become sensitised that somehow causes the tensor tympani to cramp. My low end hearing goes in the affected ear as a result (conductive loss that comes back when it relaxes).
I get a really low bass that often throbs with my pulse and other sounds. It can go into remission for weeks but so far still comes back.
I ignore it as best I can, but hearing unevenly between ears is a very uncomfortable sensation.
Not saying this is the cause of yours.

My mother has it She says it's like a cement mixer..she told me she checked outside whether people are building something . She is not very bothered by it though .

I do have some buzzes more like refrigerator sounds.. Occasionally disturbing but I also have breaks in between.. They are mostly inside my house.. Not when I'm on the street or outside...

Its a party going on down the road....the bass reverberating....can feel the ear vibrating...but its not....its another noise in my ears. Very disconcerting sound for me amongst all the other sounds.

Yes. Well, it could be the middle ear muscles (most likely tensor tympani) actually vibrating. It sounds like a nightclub down the road or a turbo prop plane in the distance or tumble dryer in another part of the house. If it is that, it's just annoying but not damaging and might go into remission or go away entirely. Don't get stressed about it, because if it is that it has a psychosomatic component, meaning your thoughts and feelings can affect it to an extent.
Do you have hyperacusis?

Alternatively, it could be a sign of something else.

See an audiologist if you know of a good one.

Since your tinnitus was originally caused by loud noise, the usual reason it becomes worse is further exposure to "loud noise" or headphone use. Even if you have been wearing noise reducing earplugs at clubs, concerts etc. If external sound is loud enough, it will pass through your head and be transferred to your inner ear by "bone conduction" and spike the tinnitus. No earplugs or moulded types can stop this.

Providing there is no underlying medical problem within your auditory system causing your tinnitus to become worse. It is my belief, on each occasion your tinnitus has spiked and you acquire an increase in the level and notice additional sounds, it's because you are exposing your ears/auditory system to "loud sounds" or you have been using Headphones. Even if you have been using headphones at low volume, people with "noise induced" tinnitus risk it getting worse.
