New, Need Help Please, Ringing Ears After a Cold / Pink Eye

I've recently had a cold for about the past week :( I also had pink eye for a few days. Recently I developed a mild ringing in my left ear. It's been going on for a 3-4 days. So I've been taking a lot of cold medicine.

I'm just here to see if anyone else had my problem and will my ringing go away?

I looked around on the internet and it says that the ringing will go away when your cold goes away because the congestion can tinnitus.

Any help is appreciated!!!!

Welcome to the forum. If you have a mild case of T from a known medical cause, then when the medical cause is fixed, T may just fade away. Staying calm and positive will help to tame T as fear and anxiety can trigger the limbic nervous system to cause you to function in fight or flight mode which will make T sound worse and alarming. Try and keep calm, that is most important. Stress can also be a contributing factor to tinnitus. Also, make sure the medications that you are taking are not ototoxic (a chemical process used in certain medicines that causes tinnitus). And also please be careful with loud clubs / bars / earbuds playing loud music directly in your ears. Your ears are sensitive at the moment, and you want to give them as much rest now as you can so they can heal.

Yes, it is an often quoted cause of T. I find also that those days my sinus is all congested due to hay fever, my T can spike quite a bit. Also often people mention that the cold medicines can trigger their T. But drug interaction is a highly personal thing. Ototoxic drugs can definitely cause T so be careful of using those with T being a known side effect.

I was taking a lot of over the counter cold medication, I am going to completely stop taking any medication and just let the cold run it course"Almost done with the Cold". Hopefully, the ringing will stop before school starts :) thank you for the help

I do not think any of those are ototoxic, but viruses can be. What I thought was just a normal, common cold caused my hearing loss and tinnitus. Pink eye is often viral, so it's possible you encountered a bad virus.

However, it is also common to have tinnitus with a cold and sinus infection. In those cases, it can go away in a matter of weeks.

Just to be sure, make an appointment with an ENT. They can check your ears and sinuses.

Okay, Thank You for your response I don't think I'll consult an ENT just quite yet I'll give it a week or two. I'm towards the end of my cold and I'll see how things are going. Also, Ive been doing a lot of research and people can get permeant T from just a cold. I'm a teenager who's never had hearing issues in my life so what are the chances of this going away? I might be overreacting sorry.

You're young so there is a good chance it will go away. It can take a couple weeks to get into an ENT. I recommend calling and making an appointment for a week or two from now. If the ringing goes away, you can cancel the appointment. If it doesn't, you'll be very glad you have the appointment.

What exactly goes on during an ENT appointment and how will they treat it?

Hearing loss or tinnitus? Really it depends on whether a cause can be identified.

I have had multiple ENT appointments. At the most thorough one, my hearing was first tested by an audiologist. The ENT then examined my ears, neck, throat and nose. He did a nasal endoscopy to check my sinuses and whether the Eustachian tube was functioning correctly. He did a basic neurological test. He also ordered bloodwork and an MRI since my hearing loss is one sided.

For treating my hearing loss I was prescribed an oral steroid and an anti-viral medicine. The thorough ENT also referred me to a very specialized ENT who administered intratympanic steroid injections. That ENT was great and ordered some additional testing, too.

I am going to give it a few days for my symptoms from my cold to completely go away then I might schedule an EMT appointment Thank You for the response

Recently got Tinnitus for the first time from a cold. It's a mild ringing in my left ear. I am a teenager who has no previous medical history of hearing loss or damage. Just wondering if this is permeant or will it go away. Has anyone had this before please let me know

Be careful of not overthinking things. You can easily get over paranoid about little things. FYI, ears popping, if you have a cold, congestion and drainage. A ENT will just look into your ears like your GP and your throat and probably feel your lymph nodes. Yes, treat your ears well. Use this as a learning tool for years later. Any damage to your ears are irreversible, so you dont want this to come back years later b/c of loud music/concerts. Most drugs at this point are ototoxic, but generally have to be consumed at a large dose or over years. Doubt your there. You should be fine.

It will dry out you need to be patient, keep on popping them, it is a slow process...if you are concerned it not clearing is causing t ask the dr for a decongestant or something along those lines.
It needs to be safe on the ears, not ototoxix or have T as a side effect..

Okay thank you!! Can I listen to music through my earbuds at a low volume or is that a bad idea?
