Hello all,

I developed new tinnitus three days ago on Friday morning, October 25th.

Around 7 a.m., I woke up and told my mother that I had very loud ringing in my ears. At that time, it was so intense that I couldn't even understand her because of the noise. Some people have suggested it might be fleeting tinnitus, while others mentioned SBUTT. The ringing decreased by 60-70% after about two hours, but it never returned to its usual level. Then, last night, the same thing happened again, lasting for several hours.

I'm not sure what this is. Can someone explain? Could this be temporary? I've had ringing in my right ear for no apparent reason and haven't exposed myself to loud sounds in over a month.

Heya,

I'm really sorry I can't provide any helpful answers, but I experience the same thing quite often. It feels like a SBUTT or a muffled hearing episode, but instead of going away quickly, it lasts for hours or even days. The muffled hearing and spike can persist, and it sometimes gets super reactive too.

I'm not sure why I have these prolonged episodes compared to the typical short SBUTT or fleeting one.

Sorry, I can't be more helpful, but I hope you're doing okay.

Do you think these episodes could be some form of hydrops, even if atypical compared to Meniere's disease or cochlear hydrops? I experience something similar, thankfully only 1 to 2 times per year. For me, it starts with a SBUTT (sudden brief unilateral tinnitus) or fleeting tinnitus in one ear. The loud tone goes away, but it leaves behind muffled hearing, often in the high frequencies, a less loud lingering tone, and a blocked feeling that can last for up to half an hour.

Needless to say, it triggers a panic attack every time.
