Cause of Tinnitus
Unkown
Hi, I'm Tyree and I think I have Tinnitus, or more specifically Pulsatile Tinnitus. I'm a 24 year old man and reasonably healthy, I have been going to the gym for about a year and cut salt and sugar out of my diet for about three.

The other day I was sitting with my family and I grabbed a beer for me and my brother, as I kept drinking this repeated whoosh sound came in my right ear and it felt as the same rhythm as my pulse.

It's probably nothing but I tend to over think and worry. It's not fatal, is it?

Most likely the whooshing noise you hear is not fatal.

Intake of alcohol can affect your blood pressure.
Did the noise only appear after drinking? Has it ever appeared before?

The noise appeared as I took more sips. And no I don't think it has happened before. Although sometimes I feel like it has.

It stops when I turn my head towards down to my right shoulder, but of course I look ridiculous :D

Looking "ridiculous" might be preferable to suffering.
If it bothers you much I suggest you see a doctor about it.

Regardless of how things go I hope you will stay here with us a while.

Hi Tyree,

From what I'm reading I get the understanding that the ringing stopped and only occured while you were drinking? If so, that is great =) Probably nothing to worry about.

Just take care of your ears man, and maybe go see a doctor anyway =)

It sounds like it's getting less prominent. My mother (who has tinnitus) doesn't reckon it is because I can't hear it unless the room is really quiet, whereas she can hear hers 24/7.

I think I'm just over thinking.

A lot of the time it sounds like a VERY FAINT but consistent whoosh. How loud is tinnitus most of the time (if it even is)

Got doctors in October.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like, you have the beginning stage of tinnitus. Yes, it might be very low and you cannot hear it unless, you are in a really quiet room. Do know this, if you do not protect your ears and possibly lay off the booz, then it can possibly get louder. Avoid as much stress as possible, and just live your life and keep a good eye on protecting the ears.

Many had mild tinnitus and it has gotten louder due to stress, and loud noises.

Thank you! I don't have anything to worry about, do I? Will it go away?

The biggest culprit for T is noise induced traumas. We really do not know, why tinnitus comes around. For some it has faded and gone away, for others it has stayed. If your started due to drinking, then I'd lay off the drinking. The seeds of T are already planted, further annoyance can make them possibly permanent and possibly louder.

Stress can also be a factor, as well as loud noises. Also, as hard as it might be.....do not focus or try to listen for the sound. Even, in a quiet room , this can lead to obsession and that can possibly annoy the T.

Good luck!

Thank you so much.

I've had a really bad sore throat for about a week, can that be a factor?

(PS. Throat is better now)

A sore throat can come about for many reasons. Possibly allergies, maybe a cold or infection. When we get sore throats it is possible that they may affect our ears as well. If you have a cold or an illness/infection then its also possible to annoy the ringing as well.

Many factors can possibly bring on T, you have to see what the underlying source/reason is. T is not going to all of a sudden come about for no reason, most of the time it does not. I understand your anxiety when it comes to T and wanting it to go away.

I got mine from a very bad illness (it started out like this) and then I made it worst by going to a concert. Before that I never had T, now it's severe. It is, what it is. I do my best, to live the best life I can..... even though These ears ring like hell :)

Was she offered any treatments? Nowadays there are things like bimodal neurostimulation on the horizon (the Lenire is the only variant released currently), and hearing restoration seems to be a decent bet at relief for many.
My mom's doctor friend said that I could be anaemic.

You should see about getting an MRA, as pulsatile tinnitus is usually vascular in nature. You're hearing turbulent blood flow in your blood vessels which can be due to a variety of reasons. One way to tell is a light press on the jugular vein will usually make it stop, which is why it goes away when you turn your head a certain way. Most times it isn't dangerous, but sometimes it can be, you shouldn't ignore it. PT is not a neurological issue like tinnitus is. It exists due to some turbulence in the fluid dynamics in your head. Mine was caused by a dural arteriovenous fistula. First I had the PT, then headaches, and when those symptoms disappeared, it was a really bad sign and became life threatening because the blood vessel shut down (which is why I couldn't hear it anymore). I needed surgery urgently.

Oh no now I'm scared.

How's your Iron levels? low levels can make your blood a bit thinner and cause whoosing, that's a fairly common cause of it. Other reasons (if it stops when you turn your head are an artery a bit close to your ear etc)
