Tinnitus Since
01/2000 on and off....now severe
Cause of Tinnitus
Honestly don't know
Hello all..I've had some form if tinnitus on and off for many years, however it always quickly subsided. 10 days ago I awoke from a short nap with terrible loud hissing heartbeat pulsating tinnitus, stronger on the left side but pretty much all over up my head. It has been nonstop since. I cannot eat, sleep or barely function. I can increase the volume by moving my jaw, pressing my scalp, etc. Did have an MRI during the week it was actually for another condition, non- diabetes neuropathy in my feet. The MRI was clean except for arthritis in my neck. I am so sick and tired and getting more depressed each day. Can anybody give me guidance who to see first beyond my GP he has not been a lot of help? An ERT specialist perhaps? Amazes me so many sufferers of this and not enough being done to cure it. appreciate any support and advice..:(

Also wanted to add I'm scheduled for endoscopic and colonoscopic procedures this week, is it safe to proceed with these under anesthesia with my tinnitus being so severe? Thank you again for any guidance..:depressed:

Thank you for sharing I'm also feeling like you. I can no longer enjoy myself and im having many panic attacks. Hopefully it'll get better for you. I haven't eaten for a while and I think you are also suffering for panic/anxitey maybe sorting that out will help.
I'm sorry for my terrible reply but I hope it helps.

Thank so much for the reply Eleanor it is very much appreciated. Perhaps the worst part of this is trying to take it on alone. I unfortunately do not have much of a support system around me, all my family is on the other side of the country. I hope you get to feeling better as as well and have a good quality of life.

I suggest you speak to Karen regarding PT tinnitus..As she's the expert on that. Good luck mate!

Also, this should help-

Pulsatile tinnitus: treatment with clonazepam and propranolol.
Albertino S1, Assunção AR, Souza JA.
Author information

Abstract
Pulsatile tinnitus synchronous with heartbeat is rare and normally has vascular origin: arterial (malformation, arterial anatomical variation) or venous (aberrant jugular bulb, glomus tumors, tympanic glomus tumor). Early etiology identification is essential for appropriate treatment to be established. Magnetic angioresonance makes the vascular identification possible and precise. We report a case of arterial anatomical variation in which the treatment was propranolol and clonazepam, showing tinnitus improvement.

No problem, I have support around me from family (my mother has tinnitus in one ear and my aunts have both had some form of it) but I know how it feels to be isolated from people due to illness and people not understanding. Maybe there are meetings for people with t near you and you can meet people there? I don't know, best wishes.

Hello @TexasT, Sorry to hear about your condition. I have arthritis in my neck also that may or may not be a factor in my tinnitus. I've been looking into that lately. Most Dr.'s don't think it's related but @Carl Horton got relief from a C5C6 fusion.https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/possible-neck-issue-tinnitus.506/page-2#post-124185

Here's a article about Cervical Spondylosis: http://cervical-spondylosis-rehabilitation.blogspot.com/

Did have an MRI during the week it was actually for another condition, non- diabetes neuropathy in my feet.

I have some issues with my feet as well that could be coming from my lower back and/or neck. Numbness and sometimes burning/stinging in my toes. Still looking for some solutions and seeking different Dr.'s. opinions. Depressing situation I know, especially the tinnitus.

Thank you for providing that great information! We sound like a set of bookends .. The spondylosis symptoms sure sound like me right down to the migraines, which I get perhaps once a month. So sorry hearing the troubles with your feet, in addition to the T. The doctors call mine idiopathic neuropathy which means they really don't know what causes it. Maybe it is generating with the neck arthritis. A week before my tinnitus struck, I had joined a neuropathy forum much like this one for sufferers. Now it doesnt much compare to this tinnitus, which is just the worst possible it could be. Frustrating is that I just retired after 30 years last year and been hitting the gym and feeling good.. then 2 months ago a lot of stress introduced into the life... perhaps my tinnitus is a culmination of that also.
Thanks again and I will work on sending positive energy your way in hopes of you feeling well..

I had the same procedures and nothing happens. I don't think you have to worry about that.

@TexasT, Being under anesthesia for your procedures could provide temporary relief of your tinnitus. It is quite common because of the sedation of the CNS. Thanks for your kind comments and I will keep you updated on my end.:)

@James Brown and @just1morething thanks for the encouraging words to get the procedures done, does help ease my mind. Until recently I had been blessed with good health...went under anesthesia once and came out very sick from it, just concerned that will happen again, on top of the tinnitus and get the double whammy..
Ugh.. thanks again gents.

then 2 months ago a lot of stress introduced into the life... perhaps my tinnitus is a culmination of that also.
That could very well be the problem too. The mind under stress can cause many body symptoms, if you believe they are true. That happens to me a lot, especially if I read my Dr. reports. Anxiety sets in and you think the worst scenario.

Welcome @TexasT. Having T for 6 years and reading many posts in various forum through the years, I can tell you stress is definitely a contributing factor to T. Even extreme grief can contribute to that. Many new sufferers post about developing T after love ones passing away, especially those losing their mothers with extreme prolonged grief. It seems that the emotional control center in the CNS of our head has an overload button which will trigger T when it is under prolonged or excessive stress. Hearing loss due to aging can also trigger T. TMJ is one cause related to bad jaw muscles. Since your T volume can increase by jaw movement, you may want to get a referral to see a TMJ specialist who also has experience treating TMJ related tinnitus. In the mean time, please do your best to stay calm and positive. Remember more stress and anxiety can aggravate T.

So be positive and try to read as many sucess stories as possible, as well as the Positivity Thread in the main Support Forum. You may want to get some supplements which are good for T, such as Magnesium, Zinc, NAC, B12, D3 etc. Also cut back on MSG, salt, sugar, caffeine & alcohol. Try to do some relaxing exercises to relax the body and mind. Get masking going asap if you haven't already. TT has great masking sounds in this link, and it also has great tips for new T sufferers. Take good care and God bless your recovery.

Many, many thanks for the great recommendations and words of encouragement @billie48. I see stress is a common factor with the T onset of many sufferers and I absolutely could see grief playing a role in mine...going to work on those relaxation techniques...thanks again!

Question for any and All...I attended a local worship service yesterday and in it they had a band that played some pretty loud music; I sat through several songs, although it was uncomfortably loud to me. At the end of the service, as I was heading home, I noticed my T had subsided considerably, almost went silent completely! I felt almost normal for awhile, didn't want to sleep for fear it would come back..eventually fell asleep...and this morning my T is back like before. Has anyone ever heard of or experienced something like this? Thanks all...

@TexasT

Yeah, that happens to me all the time and is very frustrating. The brain seems to reset the noise somehow when you nap or awaken in the morning. Maybe Autifony's drug will solve that if it ever becomes available to us. That question was asked in Jack Vernon's book "Tinnitus Questions and Answers" but I don't think they had a answer for it. It's a good book to have though with a lot of info. I have it but have not read it in awhile, but I should.

That happened to me also. I remember going fishing at the salmon rivers with their raging rapids. Sometimes my spiking T could be heard above those rapids. But miraculously in some trips, I noticed the ringing was back to baseline after a day of fishing the rapids. Both my T and the crashing waters of the rapids are of high frequency. Perhaps they call this 'Residual Inhibition' and there are actually people setting treatment based on that principle. Google it and you will find many articles.

As for T blasting away upon waking up, it is called 'Awaking Response' of the CNS, trying to monitor our vital signs to make sure we are alive, kind of like starting an aircraft and switching on the control switches. Upon missing something like the lost hearing frequency, the brain will try to recreate it with a phantom sound signal which has no sound waves travelling through air. It is tinnitus. Dr. Nagler has written an explanation in more medical detail and here is what he wrote in a post:'
