Tinnitus Since
02/06/2014
Hi everyone. I'm just looking for a little support. I woke up Monday with this high pitched ringing and hissing in my ears. It hasn't gone away. I've not slept well and have needed sleeping pills to get me off. I have depression anyway and right now I feel like ending it all. I went to my Dr who said tinnitus can last for life. How am I meant to live the rest of my life this way? I need some positive tales. Thanks

Hey vick fox,
For you to feel like ending it all because of a lil noise that you will eventually not care about shows how serious your depression is. In the beginning i felt like me enjoying life to the fullest is over, but i realize people who have debilitating diseases and paralyze try to live life to the fullest, and i am completely healthy. It may feel like you want to end your life but please don't. Everyone initial reaction when first being diagnosed with T is dramartic but as the weeks and months pass you will get use to it. But tbh i am more concern about your depression than the T. If u want to you can always message me and we can go through conquering T together. I have low moments to but i let that be moments and nothing more. Majority of my life i still smile and enjoy my day. Even if you dont want to smile still smile because like Joel osteen said sometimes you have to play in pain. Life aint easy sometimes but we here so make the best of it no matter what. You are blessed. Remember that

Vick Fox, what caused your T? Did you go out? Are you a musician? Did you take meds? Took a plane?

tell us more...

your T is very recent, it could be temporary...

Hey Vick!! So glad you found us here on TT!! So sorry to hear you are suffering! It sucks, I (we) know!!

Totally encourage you to read SoundWave's post (link above), if you haven't yet. Soundwave is SPOT ON!!(y) and some of the replies have great advice/encouragement as well!! Get stabilized and get your SLEEP ON!!:sleep::sleep::sleep:

I know where you are with T right now, and it is really gnarly, BUT you WILL get through!!! Make a plan that includes a proper sleep pattern, some form of masking that works for you, exercise, breathing exercises, and live each day for each day, don't project into the future or worry about tomorrow. Live day to day and don't give up!! I was exactly where you were at one point :bawling::banghead::inpain::arghh:, but am now WAY better!!! :) Have Hope!!

I wish you rest and peace Vick!!

Hey Vick, I know exactly what you are going through. I've had tinnitus for about 2 and a half weeks and the first week I was depressed as can be. I seriously thought of which way would be best to end my life 5 days after the onset. Luckily my family and my gf gave me something to live for. As soon as I accepted that I could have this for life and but have slight optimism it could eventually go away whether it be tomorrow or 20 years from now. Once I took this route I started healing faster both mentally and physically. My hyperacusis went away, the tone in my tinnitus lowered to a point where I was able to mask it with music, I was able to relax a bit more. Is it easy? Not even a little bit but I have regained some happy moments and at times I can't even hear my T and it is only two weeks in. Your mind is a battlefield at the moment, learn how to make the right moves. It WILL get better but you have to be strong. Don't let this dictate your life. Stop trying to hear if it is still there all the time. This is all much easier said than done but think about what you want from life and use that as motivation to win your battles. I'm pretty new to this but I empathize with you. I'm here if you need to talk. Feel free to message me. God bless!

You are getting excellent advice from above posters. The things I want to add is to encourage you to read up as many success stories as you can. Tinnitus is beatable and it is not an end game. I have lived through horrible days of tinnitus and hyperacusis and was so overwhelmed and depressed that I had to depend on meds to survive. But reading others' success stories gave me hope that I will be ok someday and I do now. So don't give up and be more positive. It will get better. Take it easy.

Just know you're not alone. I'm getting depressed as i'm on day 6 now and i still can't see a specialist. So i have no idea if it's an auditory neuroma, fluid in the ear, candida, or if it's perminantly damaged. I live in the UK, and so far the only person i've got to see is a nurse who didn't even seem to know what day of the week it is. I have a doctors appointment in 2 days. Then i'd imagine i'll be refured to ENT. Hopefully then i'll get an answer. But that could be a while away. The uncertainty is definitley getting me down, so i know how you're feeling. I can't say anything to help you. But just know you aren't alone.

You have been proactive in seeing a doctor early on. Excellent.

I always advise people having recently developed tinnitus to put in a considerable effort during the early stages. During the early stages, there is a window of opportunity where a course of steroids can affect the outcome of tinnitus becoming permanent. Whether or not a course of steriods is justified depends on the cause of your tinnitus, whether you have hearing loss or not, and how recent the onset is. IV and orally delivered steriods are most effective during the first 24/48 hours after onset. After that, intratympanic injections is the only method likely to still be of value. This method is definitely not practiced by that many ENTs - and it can be difficult to locate such ENTs in the first place. I don't know where you are based, but here are two clinics (in very different parts of the world!) that will perform such a procedure:

1) Henry Ford Medical Hospital (US), Dr. Michael D. Seidman (as far as I know = 99% confirmed)
2) Acquaklinik (Germany), Dr. Korte (100% confirmed)

I advise you to act with haste and determination. It is important to get a proper and thorough examination early on. After the window of opportunity, it is wait-and-see...

Hi Vick,

I have nothing to add to the excellent advice given already. I just want to tell you that it does get much better. It just takes time and patience, listening to the veterans on this board. If @cullenbohannon was here he would tell you to be sure to read Dr. Nagler's letter to a tinnitus sufferer because it is a big help! You found the right place at TT. I think it was divine intervention that I found it too.

Dr. Nagler's letter:

I'm starting on the road to habituation--everyone's journey is different in the matter of time but we get there in the end.
