New University of Michigan Tinnitus Discovery — Signal Timing

Who sponsors the research of Professor Susan Shore?

As far as I understand, the research is being sponsored insultingly little.

Besides, the evaluation of Susan Shore's research by ATA (American Tinnitus Association) is depressing - the site says very little about it. It can maybe somehow help someone. Something to that degree.

It drives me into misunderstanding. Also ATA further collects money and sponsors some research. It gives fixed grants of 50 thousand dollars.

This is ridiculous. This money is not enough for the researchers to even drink whiskey before the start of a study.
Probably the US Department of Defense, and the National Institute of Health. I have a feeeling your not overly accustomed with the US or you would probably understand that the FDA largely benefits corporations over individuals. Meaning it will allow sale of a questionable device if a corporation can lobby for it. Also, this type of research does not require a lot of money. You can read the RFP and NOAs but it doesn't take much. A few hundred thousand would fund this.

Should we have high hopes on this?

I touch my face I kinda feel the tinnitus or one of the 3 sounds increase a bit.
Probably won't cure but can absolutely lower your t. It depends on your expectations.

Is it lower for you now?
No. But I'm exposed to different timings every other week. And I have had very effective timings. Several of the timings are expected to increase T. I believe I'm currently experiencing one of those. Or atleast a non effective one.

I hope you dont have a severe t form of intrusiveness... like my ear.... Well I hope it works.

By the definition my regular T is a 9/10. Although I don't agree with that definition.

I want to do something about my tinnitus now!
Would using a shock pen in the nerves in my neck and a signal timing app be able to mimic somewhat the results of this trial?

Mine is a 11/10
I hear you frog @1000.

So let's cut to the chase. If the trials go well when would this be on the market ?
Mid-2020. Assuming this trial passes (which it most likely will) then it still has some hurdles. They have to write the paper, which could be a month or two, and it has to get accepted which could take up to six months. Then they go through the FDA process which will most likely take 3-6 months for them, and then they have to find a distributor.

Thanks... and is this thing likely all legitimate? Meaning will it really improve tinnitus for people?

Well it's based on a well founded theory of how tinnitus works, similar inventions have been tried with success like the Uminn device, and this exact one was tested with good results in 2016 with progressive improvement. So most likely yeah.

I haven't heard of any funding problems with the studies happening in Michigan.

If trials aren't predictive of wild success who's motivated to pay the startup cost?

Mass production of a prototype involves committed investment. Everything has to be done upfront with the assurance the initial investment will be recovered and profits made. Design schematics, injection molds, custom parts, QC, marketing/advertising materials, safety testing, trademarks, patents, UL certification, packaging, etc... Not to mention all the governmental and medical regulatory hoops, hurdles and liability concerns.

Once on the market, if it gets poor reviews they'll have to push this product on gullible tinnitus sufferers just to recoup the initial investment. (sound familiar?)

Or maybe this device is a simple TENS unit paired with a programmed mp3 player, minimal startup cost and little risk.

Go big or go home. We don't need more gimmicks. If it works, great! Let the good times roll.

Hope it works, don't we all!

Are you going to participate in the trial?

I think they are very slow in reclucting, and in proceeding with the start of the trial.

They seems to be starting on Oct 2018.

Only if they needed me (haha), I would volunteer. But I'm sure they have plenty and have no need for me at all.

There were like almost 500 hundred interested on being part of the trial. I think @threefirefour is one of them.
I "expressed interest" to get their emails. I don't actually plan on doing it. I live in California so it's too far.

Oh I'm sure they do. If you're local any help is appreciated.

Probably a $360 airfare for me, times two (my wife).

Then add transportation, room and board.

But with all that funding maybe they will provide refreshments? (put me down as chocolate chip pls)

I'd probably wind up being a control subject. haha

I'm so pessimistic it's awful.
