Noise in the Ears When Swallowing

Is this normal to have this almost like crackling noise when swallowing?
Sometime it's quite loud some times not so.
I don't think I've had this before

Hi Valeri. Don't worry it is perfectly normal. I think that in those of us with tinnitus we notice it a lot more, maybe because our auditory pathways are excited already. The noise you are hearing sounds like it is your eustachian tubes opening and closing as you swallow - a very normal thing.

The body makes lots of noises that we are generally tuned out of listening to.

I have the same problem after I was hit in both ears. While the clicking noise is going down in volume with each month. Its still there after almost 2 months.
I'm guessing our eustachian tubes have swelled or something.
Valerie did you have any ear injury or do you have any ear pain?

On the positive side my loud TTTTTTTTTT sound is almost gone since my T started month ago. i still have like crickets chirping in both ears tho.

I finally had a good night sleep yesterday and have been sleeping without any music or masking noise at nights. Thats good and this is my 2nd month on T.

I hope my T is not permanent. Good luck and good health to everyone out there.

My ENT wants a MRI so I will be getting MRI in the next few weeks. Docs can only see some of the ear so MRI scans helps docs see what their eyes can't see.

My clicking sounds like clicking. Even when I open my mouth or swallow I hear that sound. I'm guessing its just muscles in the ear area contracting expanding.. but I didn't have this condition before. Hopefully MRI shows something.

mine ressembles something like a click on a mice, it's clearely something mechanical opening and closing quite fast.

Eustachian tubes gummed up...they click when you swallow if they get blocked up with mucus.

Not something to be freaked out about...try steam twice a day.

I have these high sometimes low clicking sounds, sometimes it sounds like my jaw breaks up.. but yeah it's pretty normal, the weird thing is i've had it for as long as i remember but after i've got my T it's way louder, and it even clicks when i move my jaw in some ways.

I might think i have some TMJ issues, but there's still a month until my longer ENT visit

If you have a bad jaw, don´t wait seeing the dentist or a TMJ specialist about it. I did and mine was really bad and still is. When my noise inducced T appeared i started stress grinding my teeth during sleep. During the last month i have only been able to eat soup.

I got this sometimes too. In fact a lot of sensations regarding hearing and ears come with T and H, not only buzzing and hissin

i have no real pain tho, can it still be my jaw? I guess it could because i've had this bad tooth in the right and only chew with ledt side.

Exactly the way my jaw problem started. Had a bad tooth and with my new T i was a little bit afraid of going to the dentist. Chewing on the good side set off a lot in my jaw. Don´t wait around with it.

I can hear sounds in my head when my move my shoulders. For example if I swing my arms in front of me I can hear a swish/wind sound inside my head. If I keep my arms to my side and use only my shoulders I get the same sound. Our bodies make a lot of weird noises. Most of the time we don't hear them. Our minds block the unneeded sounds.

I wear ear plugs almost daily. I can hear my heart beat and almost anything else going on inside my body. My fav is when my stomach makes a sound. I always wonder if it was a fart. With plugs in its hard to tell at times lol.

So did you first visit a normal dentist and then a TMJ specialist? I live in denmark and i don't know the name for a TMJ specialist..

My dentist that i visited at first told me that my case was to tricky for her. She sent a referral to a specialist (9-12 months que in Sthlm).

I don't know if it's normal but I've had it for as long as I can remember. If it only happens when you swallow and both your ears kinda make a "pop" then it's most likely your eustachian tube.

Do your ears crackle and pop when you move your jaw or only when you swallow? My ears have crackled for years and I always thought it was Eustachian tube's being blocked by allergies or whatever but after I went to an ENT and they tested for that they brought up the possibility of TMJD.

I guess they have the same symptoms. So if your jaw makes a "pop" when it opens or your muscles feel tense there then I would check into finding a TMJD specialist in your area. It's not that common of a field but it sounds like it could help you. I was recently, like 2 days ago, diagnosed with TMJD and it *may* or *may not* be related to my tinnitus but I find it odd that I thought this was normal for so long.

Definitely doesn't hurt to bring up or at least to ask your ENT about.

I have seen this thread today, have a same cracking sound when i swallow. But I can also produce that sound whenever I want without swallowing. I do not know how, like moving some tinny muscle near (or in) the ear (without mowing my jav) and it cracking (with one muscle move, or esutachian tube move if it possible to move by our own. it produce 3,4 crack crack), some sticky sounds like something sticky is touching something. (for exampe like when u skqueeze your nose when he is not dry, that kind of sticky sound).
It is so loud that everyone who is setting near me can haer it?! :S

Now i found contition - Otitis media with effusion (OME). That is kind of liquid in middle ear, that do not hurt, that do not need to have infection, but can cause t. and lower hearing, kind of disorder of eustachian tube. Not so often like casual Otitis media.

I've been checked out before and been told that my ear is fine but yours does sound a little different, the way you describe it. I could describe mine as a sticky sort of sound too now I think about it but never had anybody hear it around me before.

Have you had your ears checked out , had tympanometry test before?

Or in the winter time if could just be a cold if you move your jaw and it makes a crack then its not the cold but if its just when you Swallow then i could be a Cold or an Ear infection its nothing to be alarmed about...I hope because i have this crackle in my ear and i have a cold and am told its my cold or an Ear infection

I've had this clicking and ear fullness since a miscarriage in 2014. I had sinus surgery and tubes put in which did nothing. My chiro recently had me open my mouth while I made the sound and noticed that the back of my throat moves when I make the movement. The thought is that it is actually my throat muscle moving and hitting the Eustachian tube causing the clicking noise. It is extremely annoying. It only happens when I move that muscle, swallow (saliva only) or the very beginning of a yawn. I can't stop clicking it throughout the day. It is weird that at some times it is a little quieter then others but never goes away completely. I'm wondering if through all of my adjustments and massages if it may fix the issue with that muscle and it will go away? My chiro thinks that maybe it is because I keep clicking it that it trained itself to do something that it wouldn't typically make.

I think the clicking in the ear when swallowing is a sign that the ear does not equalized or balanced properly the (middle ear) pressure.
It is usually related to Eustachian tube dysfunction or barotrauma (because of flying or scuba diving). Most likely the first reason (ETD).
Sometimes the fact that the ear does not equalized properly the pressure can worsen the tinnitus, at least temporarily.
So you should try steroid nasal sprays, and if it does not work, you could give a chance to intratympanic tubes so that pressure is balanced.

How would a doctor know if the pressure was off? I've had this since my hearing test three months ago and it has not gone away.
Anytime my throat muscles are forced to move like a yawn or burp or air coming up, it's that 1-2 second loud clicking sound -
It was the acoustic reflex test and she pushed the ear bung in a little too hard and I told the doctor but they won't say it did damage. They even did a Ct scan later and saw that I had superior canal dehiscence. (Holes in the head?)
I'm frustrated too because the ear clicking when yawning hurts.
And I get super depressed about it and freak out thinking its gonna get worse.
This used to be my good ear. Sad.
Is this etd? Anyone?
