Noises Get Louder When Heat or Cold Is Applied to Jaw

I have tmj that I guess is pretty bad. An ENT told me to put warm and cold compresses to my jaw. When I do this my T gets 10x louder. I've done it twice and each time the same thing happens. Does anyone have any idea why? This doesn't make much sense.
