Hey everyone, so I've had some weird ear sensations going on for over a month now after going to a very loud concert. Can you tell me if this sounds consistant with hyperacusis pain?

I get a burning & ache in my right ear that I really notice when I've been at work for a few hours. I work in a retail store that isn't particularly loud. I don't seem to get instant pain from noises, but maybe it sort of builds up over the day? It doesn't seem to bother me whenever I'm not at work... I try not to think about it but it's on my mind the whole day.

I don't work but if your ear pain suddenly appears and you can't always pinpoint a noise that probably caused it, then mine is similar to that.

I get an ache but I don't know if I would describe it as burning. Well, sometimes. The pain is often accompanied with a fullness sensation though.

Still don't know if it's hyperacusis or TMJ or something else - nerve related or.

The frequency and persistence or continuous pain is very distressing and worrisome to me. Tinnitus might not involve pain but ear pain obviously does and I can't mask or do anything about it.

Edit: hopefully, TMJ exercises help because I desperately need relief from the pain somehow.

Yeah, I cant really pinpoint what brings on the pain, it's okay in the mornings and nights but when I'm at work I feel it slowly building throughout the day.

Is your pain 24/7? How did your pain start?

Thanks for responding.

That sounds more like hearing fatigue, and it certainly derives from some sort of problem with your hearing.

Hyperacusis with pain is very obvious, you wouldnt be able to leave home, or would jump at sudden noises, dishes clanking and the like...

Maybe it's related to anxiety/obsessing over this problem and subconsciously tensing muscles in my ear? I've struggled with anxiety and panic attacks for years, but why would it only affect my right ear?

I also believe I have some problem with my eustachian tube. I sometimes get a very faint crackling noise in my right ear, and when I plug my nose and blow air into it my ear always feels like there is pressure and it makes a popping noise. My left ear never does this.

Thanks for your input, I do appreciate it

So the burning sensation has gotten better, but I still have a tight feeling in my right ear, tight feeling on the right side of my neck, and dull ear ache. All those symptoms come and go (seems to not be so bad if I'm distracted and not thinking about it)

Does anyone know anything about eustachian tube dysfunction?? Would this sound at all like it? Another weird symptom is when I do valsalva maneuver, I always feel a pressure come on in my right ear, followed by a pop or two. But only in my right ear, my left ear doesn't feel any pressure or popping or anything.

If it were hyperacusis I'd be wanting to wear earplugs and avoiding going out of the house, right??? Something is definitely going on with my right ear, but have no idea what it is.

Hello,

I think I have a similar problem with my left ear. I get pain over time when exposed to sounds like fans, engines, mechanical screeching etc. The issue you have with your E tubes could very well be inflamation from the noise exposure. I am having that problem too. It took almost two months for my left ear to feel "open" again and it's still not 100%.

My strategy has been to plug only the effected ear only in situations where I am exposed to a complex sound environment (party, busy mall, work) or loud noises. See if plugging it at work helps, but make sure you don't wear it all day, that can give rise to new problems (ie hyperacusis).

Good luck, I hope we both recover!

Those are symptoms of hearing problems, it can be sound sensitivity, hyperacusis etc... basically the tight feeling will appear after a long day or exposure to loud sound. I think it may be due to activation of primary areas in the brain related to the "fight or flight" reaction, so although you don't consciously perceive you are getting tense, your brain does, or your brain keeps this primary system activated even if there is no danger to your hearing...

Thanks for the reply MrCrybaby :)

I only had a muffled feeling for a couple of days when I first got these symptoms (2 months ago) Now it's just a mild discomfort, Its really hard to explain the feeling. Never had immediate pain from noises or tinnitus.

I read you previously had hyperacusis? Do you think my case is hyperacusis or something else???? Whenever I type ear pain into google hyperacusis is all that comes up..

I hope we both get better as well. Have a great day

Do you think this will go away with time??

I have had better times and worse times with ear pain... if you stay away from loud noises, the more time you get to have a balanced hearing, the less pain you will experience, and the less likely you will have a setback, and the more resistant your hearing will be with sound.

On the contrary, if you are unlucky and start being exposed to loud noises chronically probably pain will get worse as well.

I had hyperacusis, and hot sharp pain in my ear and down my face and neck when exposed to loud noise. It has improved immeasurably over the last couple months (still a ways to go though!)

I think may pain (and potentially yours, but I don't know your situation) stems largely from inflammation in the middle and inner ear in wake of noise exposure. Ear problems are complicated and only recently becoming understood (it was only recently proven that the inner ear even has pain receptors) so don't expect to find a clear answer. Just know how you feel, know your limits, and take care of yourself.

I think we will heal over time as long as we protect our ears and give them rest. We may not be able to make a full recovery (only time can tell), but I'm optimistic biotech innovations will help many of us get back healthy hearing. Choose to be optimistic!
