This is indeed what recent research has shown. I have pain hyperacusis as well, and sound gives me long lasting pain (days to weeks). Sound is not perceived as too loud. It has been speculated that pain hyperacusis is, at least in part, neuropathic and distinct from loudness H in terms of its underlying mechanisms. At first, I wasn't sure whether it was pain H or some form of neuralgia, but it has been proposed that pain H is a form of neuralgia.

Same for me. Sounds do not sound at all louder to me, they sound the same volume. Only now that same normal volume level causes pain.

No, my sound tolerance is not normal at all. Many sounds give me pain, also sounds that are low.
